Baby Reflux?

  • My son had bad reflux - it was absolutely horrible. From the age of about 2 weeks, he would often vomit an entire feed (that is very, very messy....) and it got worse - when he was 5 weeks old, there was an evening at my parents' where he screamed the entire evening, no matter what anyone did - we had dinner in shifts, with one person walking the (yelling blue murder) Isaac round the garden. He carried on screaming all night, and we took him to the GP next morning. He was admitted to hospital, for a scan, and a drip for dehydration.

He didn't put on weight between the ages of 2 and 6 weeks either, as well as getting dehydrated.

Gaviscon didn't help at all. Ranitadine and Dom Peridome did.

There's a website called littlerefluxers - a forum for parents, might be worth checking out.

  • we thought my little girl had reflux as her symptoms were the same very early on. We also got told it would pass etc etc...but you just know when something is not right.

Overtime she developed heavy snoring at the age of about 1 also along with the vomiting every night without fail. a few visits to the gp and they diagnosed enlarged adenoids(not sure on the spelling). But they still treated the two seperatly, this continued, she barley gaine much weight and as she was a prem baby she was tiny anyway.
I was at my wits end, nights were just constant sick and crying and she had develpoed sleep apnea, horrible.

The last straw was when i was in the super market one day and she had not slept fully in days, she was snoring so loud in the puchchair but would wake up crying because she strugled to breath, a woman commented on how loud she was, nothing nasty but i just broke down...how could it be normal i thought? i left then and there and went straight to the childrens A & E.

Now i wish i would have gone sooner, but the GP made me feel like i was being silly..worrying too much..it would pass with age! That day my daughter was admitted, sleep tests done for her apnia, so many doctors for 'the worst case' they had seen of enlarged adeniods. Apparently the vomiting was caused from the irritation in her throat...some thing so simple and it messed her health up so bad.
The next day she had surgery aged 2 1/2 and she has thrived ever since.

Sorry its long winded and im not saying that your child is not suffering from simple reflux but just wanted to get the point across to get second opinions if you dont get anywhere and things dont improve. I wish i did because life was hell.

it doesnt sound too serious if its only a small amount and the baby is gaining wieght.
my three babies were breast fed but often brought up small amounts of milk when being burped. sounds to me like you may need to find a different burping method. No3 son was a stubborn baby - and would fall asleep while being sat up to be burped, then immediately wake up when laid in his cot. pick him and he would either burp or pass wind loudly, sick up or all three! we eventually found what we called the 'teddy bear method' worked best at winding him! this involved laying him flat across the lap then putting one hand under his chin and sliding the other up between his shoulder blades and sitting him up - could take a few tries but this almost always produced an almighty burp! we called it teddy bear because it reminded me of how teddies growled when you did this!
my daughter preferred the over the shoulder method and patting her back - she mostly passed wind downwards then!
  • My first baby used to do this and unfortunately she had an intolerance to my milk! Once I stopped feeding her myself, she kept her milk down. Keep trying though cos it may be something else x

We had it here too, we had gaviscon in all his meals for two years, for bottles the nurse showed us how to make it up then pour it into a clean bottle teat and let him suck it straight out of there, without a bottle attached, then when he'd had that we stuck a proper bottle in and he drank that.

  • hi, when my 4th baby (now 3yrs old) was one week old he started crying almost all the time, i had also noticed he was being a little sick after a feed. i thought it may be colic as i had been through it before with my other children, however my baby did seem a little young. anyway the doctor was not concern. this went on for 5 and a half months and i was absolutely exhalsted! my baby cried all the time except when being feed, and i spent most of the time rocking him in his pram in the kitchen as the extractor fan noise was the only thing that came close to settling him.(even through the night) the hv said it may be reflux so after seeing a doctor they suggested putting him on reflux medication, now i wasnt to sure about this as the medication wasn`t used on babies in this country (although it was used abroad all the time) but as i had hardly slept nor my baby in the last 5mths we gave it a go, but with no joy. i was getting really mad by now that the gp wasnt concerned about my baby being in so much obvious pain, after researching myself on the internet i asked the doc if he could be allergic to dairy (bottle fed) he said no as my baby was gaining weight and would be mal-nourished, anyway by 6mths i decided to take my baby of dairy formula and tried him on soya formula, and within 24hrs i had a happy baby! you would not beleive the difference. i was soooo angry that the doc would not even consider the possibility. after visiting a ped at hospital they said he had been comfort feeding as the sucking on the bottle was the only thing that eased the stomach cramps he was getting from the dairy, they soon prescribed hypo milk as history of breast cancer in family so didnt want him having much soya, by 11mths i slowing introduced dairy in the form of yoghurts, cheese etc and as long as he didnt have too much he was fine, every so often he would get a little belly ache but nothing to bad. and now he has it all. sometimes i think you need to follow your own instinct, and if your not happy with what the doctor says, ask for a second opinion or ask to be refered to the hospital, you are your babies voice! good luck xxx
