Baby Reflux?

Hi all, question about baby reflux?
Our baby is 4 weeks old now and every time she is fed ( breast ) we burp her and have her sitting up for a while, yet as soon as we lay her down on her back she becomes restless then we pick her up and she vomits. This happens every time, we went to the doctors last week and she was not concerned, however we fed our LO this morning and i have just burped her and finally put her in her swing on a low rocking setting, she has vomited 2 times now.
I really do think she has reflux.
Anyone else have or had this problem before?

There are other things this could be, if it's getting more regular you must take her back to the GP.

What is your diet like, are you eating anything that could be making your milk too spicy or acidic?

  • Diet is ok, fruit, veg, nothing especially spicy though....
  • My son has just been diagnosed with reflux and he is nearly 15, it has been over a year to make the diagnosis but i found the forum living with reflux very helpful. It is mostly about babies but the people on there are very nice and would point you in the right direction I am sure.

    Hope this helps.

  • When you say vomits - what are we talking - a little bit or a stomach full? Many babies will bring back a tiny bit of feed to the extent that parents get into the habit of having a towel or something over their shoulder when holding them! In any event if its more than just a mouthful its worth getting it checked out as they can have a condition where the muscle at the top of their stomach doesn't open properly, so the feed goes down and straight back up (pyloric stenosis I think), or as you say reflux can be a problem. Is she gaining weight as she should?

(NB this might be interesting for discussion but really should be being raised with your GP or health visitor if you are concerned)

  • My son, who's 3 now, was sick after nearly every feed as a baby. It only really stopped when we started to wean him. We were never that concerned as it was never a massive amount (like other poster said, only ever about a mouthful) but it did happen when we laid him down after a feed. We raised it with HV who said it's very common and son was always a healthy weight. We just used to take plenty of clean vests etc out with us and kept a tea towel/ muslin to hand at home!

If the GP didn't seem too concerned I'd try not to worry but if sick is a large amount or getting more frequent then keep pursuing it with them.

Yes, OP, this is what my son had which is why it's increasing you need to go back to the GP, although it's much rarer in boys than girls it's still possible. Babies can become very very ill if this conditon isn't caught early enough.

Also, eating too much citrus fruit/drinking too much OJ can make you milk too acidic and make a very uncomfortable baby.

If you think it's something to worry about, keep going back to GP until they take notice of you. Chances are you are not a fussy/overprotective Mum but that your instincts are correct and something more is wrong. I have learned to trust my instincts over Drs let me tell you!

My daughter had silent reflux from 5 weeks old.

It was horrendous to be honest. She used to be sick into her mouth then swallow it back down along with the stomach acid causing her constant pain.

From 5 weeks old she screamed 24/7 (really she did) wouldn't sleep more then 2 hours in a row at night and didn't sleep at all in the day. She arched her back while feeding and alot afterwards.

At 3 months old after numerous GP visits I refused to leave until they did something as I was at my wits end, they got the head doctor in who told me 'babies cry you just gotta get on with it'

I may have been a first time mum but I think i know the difference between a crying baby and one who screams in pain all day.
She was breastfed only as well.

I ended up diagonsing her myself by typing her symtoms into google, then marching to the GP's and demanding a referal, not that the hospital visits did much good either.
She was put on every medication going at one time or another and none really helped.
They told me to go on a soya/diary/egg free diet, didn't help apart from i lost weight.

By 9 months old after being told it would get better when she was sitting up on her own (it didn't) then when she went onto solids (it got worse then she would swallow one spoon and scream in pain) I booked privatley to Great Ormond Street in desperation.
More medication was given, helped a bit....but in reality it was waiting until she walked and things got easier.

Shes 5 now and still suffers with reflux, at night she always sleeps with her head right back and her necked stretched but it only really flares up badly when shes ill.

5 years later and shes still my only child, I can;t begin to tell you how much strain it put on my relationship trying to cope with this little screaming baby 24/7 and how unhelpful everyone else was.
I remember one night crying desperatly as i was so tired i couldn't even function, my boyfriend had to take her and drive round the M25 for hours as its the only way she would sleep and so i could get some sleep.

Since then i have hated going to the Dr's I just don't trust them at all, you have to really fight to make them understand something is wrong with your child :(

Sorry for the long story but it brings back so many memories when i see the word reflux!!!!
  • I'm the dad by the way, well the GP made us feel a bit silly last week, HV have said pretty much the same, i don't know its hard to gauge how much she throws up it may be 1 or 2 teaspoons but it does happen after every feed and only after placing her down flat, then she gets a bit restless then you pick her up and she vomits?
HV coming tomorrow for a visit to weigh her so we're gong to ask again and make sure she understands our concerns. Also she is putting on weight fine, just under 5 ounces last week.
  • Go with your gut feeling and ask the GP to look into into it if you feel it's not your usual baby posseting.
Both my daughters have rotten reflux and both are still on meds at 5 and 6.My prem middle daughter vomited all day every day and is still tube fed now due to damage caused by it.Eventually after 29(!!) months of her in constant pain and aspirating on feeds causing pnemonia and monthly hospital admissions she had some pretty major surgery to basically stitch her tum round her oesophagus and now cannot physically vomit. As soon as my third was born and started the choking, the blue tinges etc I was straight to the docs and didn't let them fob me off.
You may have a bit of a fight on your hands to be taken seriously if your LO is gaining weight though. Most docs take weight gain as a sure sign a baby doesn't have reflux but my DD2 was always on the chubby side. The doc sent her for a pH study to shut me up tbh but the report showed severe reflux.
With you saying she's restless..is she crying?Arching?raising her knees to her chin etc after feeds? Are you sure you're fully winding her?My non reflux first born would vomit after feeds too, lots of babies do..it's the discomfort that marks the difference in my eyes x
Slightly mad mummy to four kidlets aged 4 months,6,7 and 8 :D:D:D xx
