problems with BBC (TV) channels

not sure if this is the correct section, anyway here goes

can anyone shed any light, my daughters Toshiba TV (about 10 month's old) in her bedroom is having problems with the BBC channels, totally unwatchable, all other channels are perfectly fine, have tried to retune, but still get the problems with BBC 1 & 2

however all other channels (DVB, by the way) are fine

earlier today I moved the TV, downstairs to check with a different l aerial, straight away no problems with any channel what so ever

anyone got any suggestions

Thanks

  • It's possible you have a faulty aerial - have you checked to see if there are any transmission works going on in your area?

Are both aerials pointing the same direction?

The same aerial serves all the other TV'S in the house, and there's no problems what so ever with these, also tried the faulty tv downstairs on the same aerial feeding the front room in the house, there was no problem with the BBC channels using this aerial

we only have 1 aerial, there appears to be no other problems with any other TV in the house

    Thanks for the replies

As the ariel is ok, check the cable and connectors to your daughters room.
  • Check the fly lead on another tv then if that is ok it is probably the socket wiring/cable.

This problem reminds me of a similar fault at my sister's place. Again it was with BBC 1 and 2. She lives in a poor signal area and all sorts of things have been done to improve matters but without much success. The final hurdle was that the TV will not display channels which it detects are less than 50% of what it deems is a suitable signal strength. Only on rare days does BBC 1 and 2 exceed this even with the amplifiers and you have to tune the TV on a good day.

I am wondering if your case is similar. When you took her TV downstairs did you have to unplug another TV in order to plug the aerial into your daughter's one. This could mean that during your test you had one less TV on the system with anything up to a 3dB improvement in the signal strength. This could be enough to make the TV work. It's either this or the socket in your daughter's room has a problem.
It's not my fault your honour, they made me do it.

Are you on a borderline area in terms of signal strength?
TV tuners and PVRs vary in their ability to handle poor strength signals. Some are more sensitive. My Sagem PVR was very bad with poor signal, but the TV didn't have any problems.

care to expand on this please ??? the socket wiring/cable ???
as far as I'm aware there no problems with the mains socket in the bedroom

Took the TV downstairs, plugged into another mains socket, next to TV, connected the aerial from the TV, to the supposedly faulty TV, both BBC 1 & 2 worked perfect straight away, much to my frustration

again as far as I'm aware, were not in poor signal area, can't recall any problems in the past, the TV was new last Christmas, previously we never had this problem

    still confused :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

I think the suggestion is that there is probably a problem with the cable between the arial and the tv when it is in your daughter's bedroom.

Can you check the wiring between the arial and the tv when it is in D's bedroom?

I am not sure I explained myself sufficiently well. I did not mean to bring mains sockets into the test you carried out since I am sure that one works as well as another.

I was talking about aerial sockets. During your test downstairs did you unplug an aerial lead from the downstairs TV in order to carry out the test. In short, was there one less TV connected to the aerial system during your test.

This fact could have improved the signal to your daughter's TV.
