  • Hi
My laptop turns on but nothing is showing on the screen- it was working perfectly a little while ago. I tried turning off and on, running down the battery but still nothing. The laptop is whirring. (im usung hubbys at the moment)
    Any ideas anyone please?
    Dora xx

It could be an update to the drivers of course, when you press F8 instead going in to safe mode try last known good configuration.

    Never say never with computers....

It 's worth trying "last good configuration", but this only rolls back the registry, I think the problem is in one of the Windows or hardware driver files...didn't suggest this as it rarely works in these cases, amd as Debitcardmayhem said, lets not rule it out.
  • Have tries last known config which goes to load windows xp screen then disappears.
Tries it again and still get the stop oo50 code. I have to go to work now but will be back this afternoon and will try the memtrest thing- would it be ok to download to a pendrive?
I read somewhere that it could be the video driver?? is there a way that I could find out what my driver is via my laptop-all I know is that it is a Nvidia.
    speak later and thank you
  • Hello,
    IM HOME AGAIN.
I am trying to burn a cd with Avira rescue on it (as suggested by Gunjack). Do I just put it in laptop drive then turn on? Then what?

I've never tried to run Memtest from a pendrive - only from a CD. Someone else may have had some success?

re: yr second question, it could well be corrupted Nvidia drivers, but unless you have the Windows disk you're stuck (linux users might disagree, but as a non-techie I advise you don't go there). You might have had a chance with a windows XP Pro install CD or one you could borrow, if you can't then try your local repair shop.

With the disks there are several options to try, initially using XP's recovery console,
  • Ive tried booting it with the avira rescue disc in and nothing.
Hubby has found me an xp pro disc but again nothing happens when i have it in the machine and turn on apart from all the gothic writing and then it comes up over range and goes off!

You probably need to change the BIOS settings so that it boots from disk,

Press F2 when booting (its F2 on my wife's Samsung, try Del if not), so that it enters the BIOS program, go to "boot", and then change the boot priority so that it looks at your cd/dvd drive first. then save the changes and reboot.

Before you start to play around with the Windows installation you really need to backup your data, have you decided how you wnat to do this? Normally a techie would remove yr hard drive, place as a slave on another PC and just copy over yr personal folders. including pictures, music, documents, emails etc.

This is how to get into the XP Store console; http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307654

This is a third party's view as to retoring your system to an earlier time:

Booting from an XP disk also allows you to do a repair install, which theoretically protects yr data and programs, or a clean install which wipoes everything and starts afresh - I am risk adverse so would want to backup everything before I played around here.
  • Thank you for all your help- I am getting someone to look at it for me xx
