    1.try what esqui suggested.
    2. When you get the safemode options screen, is there an option to turn off automatic restart?
    3. On your previous attempt - the white on black graphics is the loading of the basic windows software. It passes through very quickly then it should halt with the last items showing, then after a while it would normally go into an abridged version of Windows. You appear to tell us that it starts this process, and then turns off?

sounds like a software issue - either xp is corrupted or it's infected quite badly. Try an avira bootdisk to clear any infections to try and achieve a normal startup:-

    http://www.avira.com/en/support-download-avira-antivir-rescue-system

download the iso version, burn it to a disk using nero, imgburn or similar that'll burn iso images, and boot the lappy from it.

Unfortunately with the info to hand it is difficult to say what the cause is, Gunjack could be right, but equally it could be a software or hardware problem - eg we are no further forward.

DO you have a WIndows Install disk/CD? I will look on my wife's Samsung later to see if there is a restore partition. One of the kay aspects to worry about is backing up your data. Would I be right in thinking that you have limited knowledge of these things?

Essentially I would like to get into teh Repair Console to run some tests
  • Yes Im afraid I have very limited knowledge and get frustrated very easily. If it was a software issue would that affect my screen though?
I dont have any disks as the lappy was bought off a third party with software installed.
I will leave it for now and come back to it tomorrow. Thank you for all your assistance so far x

    Okay, no probs//

I believe that you have a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) but as we can't turn off automatic restart we are unable to determine the potential causes - read this article which explains the situation and how a techie can get around it - http://www.technibble.com/how-to-disable-automatic-restart-for-bsod-if-you-are-unable-to-get-into-windows/

1, I would therefore suggest that with your limited technical expertise, and the nature of the problem, that this is best left for your local repairman -
2, He can remove the hard drive and backup your data first - he will also be able to check for probable causes - software (maybe this if related to your screen problem) - hardware (damaged hdd or RAM) - or as suggested a virus.
    3. He should ahve the resources to re-install Windows if necessary (assuming you have the XP COA License sticker underneath.
    4. I will update this once I have looked at the Samsung here.

    Edit:

I looked at my wife's samsung - it came with disks rather than a restore partition - You said you have XP, and I now see that was right, the pro version - what does it say on the label underneath: XP Pro?

One other thing to try: To get the automatic boot turned off - I have just tried this on mine - goto into safe mode, then instead of choosing an option, press CTL + Alt + Del simutaneously, then goto into safe mode gain - do this 3-4 times, and then you should get the extended menu whereby you can select the option to turn off automatic restart. Then when it next fails it should halt - the info on this screen should give us a clue as to the problem - the 0x000000nn is important as maybe any specific diagnsotic - write down as much as you reasonably can (the numbers in the brackets aren't usually too important).

    Good luck.....

seen a couple like this recently, the infections have caused just these symptoms. In two cases it was fixable, in the third no matter what I tried, it needed a full wipe and reinstall to sort it :)

    Good morning.
I have managed to stop automatic restART in safe mode and now have a blue screen that says the following: -
    PAGE-FAULT-IN-NONPAGED-AREA
  • AND
    STOP
    0x00000050 (0x984C7084,0x00000000,ox804DA0A2,0X00000000)

    Thats helpful..
I suspect that this is a 0x00000050 error - there are a couple of things to try

    1. Try the same process again, you may get a different BSOD error

    2. If you can, download memtest86, and create the startup disk from here http://www.memtest86.com/download.html - this would test your memory for problems

    3. Otherwise if you are not confident, as I said you may need to take it along to yr friendly local IT man

    4. On reflection I believe that the error is caused by corrupted or missing system (Windows) or hardware driver files. - without the Windows Software disk, ir would be difficult to move forward - local IT specialists would probably have the software to either identify the fault or do a repair or full re-install
