That would also mean that I may seriously consider moving to Scotland. I've always liked the Scots.
If Scotland had gone independent prior to the credit crunch, then they would now require a greater bailing out than Greece. Ironically, if was a financial crisis that forced the union originally and the Scots required England to bail them out then.
Currently the Scots get more money per head from the Govt than the English. Whilst a few loud mouths want Scottish independence, I believe most Scots have their heads screwed on and realise that they are better off being part of the Union.
The Scottish cannot actually become independent without Westminster agreeing to it. No matter how much Alex Salmond wants it.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0 -
Maybe it was genetic misfortune, but how can you control that?
Quite easily. By genetic screening available for decades to proactive treatment/surgery, to Gene therapy, to new drugs and treatments and finally and most improtant as it was held up for a decade by religious sentiment- Stem Cell research/therapys. Ther is a whole worl out there, and why LE will increase.0 -
While I am totally of the view that the OP is an idiot and while I am the last person to want to be seen to be defending the NHS, I do find atush's assertion that his 95 year old MIL was 'done in' by the NHS to be a little weird.
Could it not be the fact that she was 'done in' by being 95?0 -

Well you better start paying more into your Pension, 'cause you'll probably have to work to at least 70 before you get your State Pension0 -

Say you arrived at your local hospital with a hernia- ie your intestines were poking outside your body. as that is what a hernia is.
What would you expect to happen? Surgery to correct it and save your life? Or a slow lingering painful death by infection after the intestines become necrotic as they ineveitably will do?
Dying slowly is more costly for the NHS than a quick surgery, but makes their surgery rates appear more sucessful in the rankings as they don't have to worry about her dying on the table due to the anesthesia. To top it off, she got CDiff. Twice.
You can get a hernia at any age, she happened to be in her 90's. If this is health care rationing, why not have euthanasia instead as it will be more humane than denying treatment due to age?0 -
You continue to demonstrate your ignorance. Some people over state pension age get no state pension at all, because they have no NI record. Those people, "without other provision", do get something to live on, they get the "safety net" of pension credit, housing benefit/local housing allowance, council tax benefit and possibly other benefits.
The state pension is paid based on contribution records, not need, so it's not a safety net.
You are splitting hairs here. Pension credit is a pension.0 -

Scotland could always declare UDI and show Westminster the finger. Would a British PM risk civil war to maintain the union by force? That's the last thing we need, surely!0 -

I would be interested to hear the doctor's side of the story. There must be a reason why they decided not to operate and I'm sure that age was the main factor. At the end of the day a 95 year old has a very short life expectancy and the NHS need to decide whether it is worth the cost to go through this process for a person already at the end of their natural life. Palliative treatment is normally the most humane way to deal with such patients and if this was not administered properly then you have grounds for complaining, but not otherwise.0 -

And how much of all this will your friendly family GP offer on the NHS? This is all future science. I have a yearly Nuffield 360 degree health check through my employer's benefits package, but it will be a while before they offer MRI scans and such like - these things don't come cheap. And I'm quite fortunate - my parents used to work in factories and had no such perks.0 -
Ironically, if was a financial crisis that forced the union originally and the Scots required England to bail them out then.
Then again it could be described as blackmail and bribery by the English to force the Scots to join the Union.

Scotland also pays in almost as much in taxes as it receives for spending. Many other areas of the UK, including England pay less in taxes than they receive for spending.Whilst a few loud mouths want Scottish independence, I believe most Scots have their heads screwed on and realise that they are better off being part of the Union. The Scottish cannot actually become independent without Westminster agreeing to it.
