I'm relatively fortunate in having a decent job, but for millions it will mean having to work for longer while in poor health.
If you actually had a clue you'd realise that the state pension is not a "social safety net". Means tested benefits like pension credit, housing benefit etc are. Someone on a low income gets state pension topped up because it's not enough to act as a safety net.0 -

Gracchus Babeuf is just a moron, I have now put him on my list of people to ignore. The list was empty until now.
Ooh, what a great feature - his past posts aren't displayed any more, just their position in the thread.
Actually, just checked his profile and he's an IT Manager. He can't even spell, he left out the SH at the beginning!0 -

He could always be lying.0 -
There are 23 years to make good a sum of £7,500 (in today's money) from age 44.
Let's assume you make 2% over the amount State Pension goes up by on investment returns. That needs saving of £4,750 today to reach £7,500 in 23 years (in today's money).
Apply higher rate tax relief on a pension contribution, that needs a pension contribution of £2,850 today.0 -

what safety netwould that be- the one for intellectually challenged socialsts in their 40's who live just outside the M25? The one that doesn't extend to anyone over 80?Gawd help the OPs blood pressure if they decide to raise the SP age to 68 as well as advancing the timescale
If LE keeps on increasing as it has been doing it'll be 70 by then no matter who is in charge- it will have to be.0 -
The UK may not include Scotland in a few years! An SNP overall majority, and the polls showing ever increasing support for indepenance - now more people are in favour than against:
http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/2011/09/05/support-for-scottish-independence-running-at-its-highest-level-in-three-years-86908-23398404/
That'll finish Labour permanently south of the border :rotfl:
That would also mean that I may seriously consider moving to Scotland.I've always liked the Scots. :rotfl:

No, it is a safety net because if it was removed millions of people without other provision would have nothing to live on.
I would actually like to remove the state pension from those who are higher rate taxpayers whilst pensioners. This would be done on a steady taper from, say, £30k onwards.0 -

You continue to demonstrate your ignorance. Some people over state pension age get no state pension at all, because they have no NI record. Those people, "without other provision", do get something to live on, they get the "safety net" of pension credit, housing benefit/local housing allowance, council tax benefit and possibly other benefits.
The state pension is paid based on contribution records, not need, so it's not a safety net.0 -

I may do the same. If the kids show an interest in going to university in Scotland
But will probably return when they've finished0
