"unlimited" Wifi vs. mobile Internet access

Thanks for the replies, I was aware of the wifi offered- seems pretty vast to me as wherever I am with my ipod and try to see if there is anything free going (the ipod has free wifi) I constantly see the stuff O2 are offering (but its all locked, presume it wouldn't be locked on whatever handset I had if I was with 02).

So, if anyone can please answer my question: If 02 are offering this 'free unlimited wifi' and I'm seeing these wifi options everywhere I seem to go, does this mean if I were to get an 02 contract/sim/deal I wouldn't even need to use the 500mb of internet acess they offer?

Does anyone know or have experience of this?

That is correct. The Cloud/BT OpenZone WiFi access is independent of your 3G data allowance.
You can keep the 3G allowance for when there is no WiFi coverage.

The article suggests one need not even be an O2 customer, that said I'm in the Midlands and have not seen any O2 wifi, for me I often see openzone or btfon and the app allows me access via my bt internet account.

Its not for everyone, from what I can work out its only for 02 customers (and maybe BT internet customers too?) I can see them listed on my ipod under the wifi options but they all show with a padlock on as locked which means I cannot acess them. If I understand correctly, if I had an 02 mobile I'd be able to acess these as part of my contract for unlimited amounts of time and as part of my contract for free.

But it,s has not been launched yet and anyone will be able to use it.

We're launching a hotspot network called O2 Wifi. It's free. And you don't even have to be an O2 customer to use it.
Even if your mobile’s with another network or you get your home broadband from someone else, everyone’s welcome."

"Both O2 and non-O2 customers will be able to enjoy free access"

"O2 customers will be automatically signed up to free Wi-Fi offering by the end of 2011, whilst non-O2 customers will have to go through a sign-up process."

    For goodness sakes... :D

There are completely different issues being discussed here. The access under discussion has nothing to do with O2 WiFi.

Jenniewb is interested in The Cloud/BT OpenZone Hotspots. Access to them is included with certain O2 mobile telephone and mobile broadband packages.

O2 WiFi is a completely different and unconnected service.
  • I am on O2 PAYGO and have the works web bolt on. I pay £15 per month and get Unlimited calls & texts to other O2 (all my family & other half are on O2) the bolt on costs me £10 of my balance and I get 50 picture messages, 1GB data and unlimited WiFi. I still have £5 of credit left for everything else. With the WiFi I can connect to ANY WiFi signal. If it is locked I need the code as per usual and if its open I can connect. The cloud in places like Wetherspoons etc. is best as I dont need to register or pay to use it. So, Wetherspoons or the open access WiFi at work for downloading podcasts, android market etc. and decent 3G/HSDPA for the rest.
  • Yes, this O2 offer looks promising. The advert says that you will get unlimited internet access when The Cloud & BT Openzone Wi-Fi available.
But it rather looks like the O2 free Wi-Fi spots are just 'invisible'.
There must be a catch: fair usage policy or something similar, otherwise everyone would go for it.
It is not even clear on O2 website. There is the hotspot directory but it does not tell you which hotspots are free. It is just misleading the customers.
