Insurance on old Skoda
Hi,
I have my test in around 7 weeks time, and am having lessons every week to get ready for it.
Around 2 months ago i brought a 1986 Skoda Estelle and have been doing insurance quotes for it.
I have been repairing the car after the engine blew up (brought the car for £200), i have rebuilt the engine, refitted it, and done all of the work on the car, it has been a great project, it owes me under £400, and will owe me around £400 once i have put another MOT on it (it has 3 weeks MOT left at the moment).
Still needs completing, small bits need doing.
To my discontent, i cannot get insured for under £1050. I have done all quotes on all sites, it is cheaper when i add my mum as a named driver.
It is a lovely old car. No power steering, no ABS, no rear window wipers (as standard!).
But due to its age, i cannot have any GPS tracker or smart box. (It won't accept cars over 20 years old.)
Do you have any suggestions on how to make the insurance cheaper without compromising the price? I am currently unemployed, i have time more than i have money.
If it helps, i am 20 years old, unemployed, when i pass my test, i will be 21.
Cheers,
Rob

Is that price for having a full licence or just provisional. If just provisional then you can expect the price to jump massively when you pass your test.
If it is for a full licence then I suggest you rip their arms off as nthat is a pretty low price for someone your age with 0 no claims bonus.0 -

That's the cost of historically so many youngsters buying their first car and then going ape. Get smashed in the club, load all the mates and girls in the car and hare off for a burn up. The consequence is that all youngsters are now loaded with penal insurance costs, even the sensible responsible ones. Also why the car is now often nominally owned by a parent with the youngster a named driver, forgotmyname wrote: »Thats the cost of motoring these days. You scullion! You rampallian! You fustilarian! Stick your excess up as high as humanly possible. Your quotes are probably coming back with about £250+ excess and in reality your car is worth very little (regardless of what it's worth to you in the event of an insurance payout it's worth a bag of jelly beans and a stick of rhubarb).
One's just sold on eBay for £439, there's none showing on completed listings and there's none on eBay. So if anything happens to yours, cracked headlight, broken bumper or a dented wing; the insurance will write is off as uneconomical to repair as they only use new parts and then there's labour charges etc.. If you crash it yourself, it'll get written off with a possible value of £400 and you'll get about £150 back. Your premium will go up more than that £150 so it's not worth making a claim on your own insurance; whack your excess up and hope it brings your quote down.0 -

Was going to say exactly the same.. as long as it is over 15 years most specialist insurers will reguard it as a classic car. As a rough guide a landrover 90 costs 550 for me on a normal policy but 150 on a classic.0 -
Insurance is not a commodity. If you pick the cheapest provider to save and they end up not fulfilling your claim — which you could have reasonably known by searching out a cheap company — it’s your fault. Pick a good company because it can be worth thousands of dollars.

some classic policy will only take a 21 yr olds or above and some have even changed to only taking on 25 yrs and older.
them skoda's are a blast to the past i must say im 27 and remeber as a teeny bopper seing these skoda's.
things to think about when getting a quote.
mam dad both drive? add mum on as a named driver to your policy or even both mum and dad and see what the outcome is.
third party, TPFT is not always cheaper than fully comp, allways get a quote with all three types of cover as this changes with different companys.
security, thatchem rated alarms and immobilisers reduce a premium, how much do they cost? well, depending on make and model of alarm you buy and have fitted, to be MSE ive always advised purchasing a NEW UNUSED alarm from fleabay ive noticed that you can buy branded thatcham rated alarms NEW for £20-30 cheaper than buying through a supplier and fitter, all thats left is to have an appoved vat registered auto lecky to fit it.
the area you live may have an increase on your premium, unfortunatly we cant avoid that.
your mileage higher the miles the more you pay lower the miles can help reduce your risk.
PASS PLUS some insurers are still taking them, my advice is do one, can reduce you premium by a considderable amount
skoda club enroll pay a small fee may get you a discount also0 -

However, if your car is worth so little that you would never claim for damage to it (because your policy would be cancelled and you would lose your NCD) then it is irrelevant what their claims department is like because you will never claim :rotfl:We need the earth for food, water, and shelter.
