I am currently a Personal Assistant in NHS. I have lots of Admin type skills I have worked in different office jobs in different sectors for the last 10 years and always worked with all Microsoft office products so have very good computing skills. All jobs I have had have had a lot of variety to them.0 -
You should be able to find a PA job for 25-30k. Id say go for it. London is a great place. I loved working in London, just hated my commute in because I dont live in London. I loved going out after work, being able to see shows, and buy anything you needed all in the one place. And discovering new places all the time. And its usually the warmest place in England when you watch the weather, so nice in the summer to sit in the parks.0

Thanks Claire
I think I will definitely give it a go just have to save up a little for now. I will be letting out my flat anyway so if it doesn't work out I will still have my flat at home.0 -
I commute to London - doesn't take that long from my neck of the woods providing the trains are running ok.
I work as a PA in financial services in central London - the money is very good for the job I do. That said, my walk to the office from the station in London takes me past a couple of recruitment agencies, Reed and Brook Street and I often look in their windows to see what sort of salaries are on offer. I have to say, that I think many secretarial/PA roles seem quite low paid for London - about 23 - 24k permanent and temp hourly rates seem to be about 8-10ph and I was earning that (both temp and perm) in my local town before I moved to London. I don't know if it's the industry I work in that tend to pay more or if salaries are dropping a bit in London.
That's just my experience though.Debt 30k in 2008.:o Cleared all my debt in 2013 and loving being debt free
Mortgage free since 2014

salaries are dropping for sure. Many agencies are not taking new bods onto their books.
My OH used to get 15ph no trouble, now he is scrapping for 8/9 an hour and not getting because competition is fierce.
There are a few jobs in administration in NHS London, but of course there are closures of hospitals and other facilities, and there will be im sure a fair deployment list in some trusts. I notice a few of them are open to current trust employees only. Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.
Theres no dollar sign on piece of mind
This Ive come to know...
So if you agree have a drink with me, raise your glasses for a toast :beer:0 -
I'd say if you feel it's the right time in your life to take a risk and your hubby is up for it then GO FOR IT! You could survive on 25K however your husband's salary will help. Just do your research and look for particular agencies and websites that focus on these types of jobs.
Do your research in terms of areas to live in, types of accommodation, places commutable from, say, greater London as you may be better off financially. Plus, not all jobs are in inner London so it would be worthwhile looking at places closer to where you live.
Personally, I looooooove London! I don't find it harder to go for jobs here than anywhere else. In terms of crime and rudeness - that's a city for you, doesn't matter whether you're in the capital or not! Yes, commuting on the tube can be hot and sweaty in the summer, but if that's seriously going to stop you from coming, then I'd say you're not ready (though I personally think you sound born ready for this!).

Thank you I certainly feel a though I was born ready.
I am very excited about it just have to save up some more and look at letting out our apartment and that should be is ready. I really appreciate everyone help.0 -
I just read the other post you made on the page backwards.
Did you mean that your OH will also be looking for work at the same time? Can I ask what he does?
6 months savings im guessing is about 12-15k, is this really feasible for you?
I suggest one of you applies and gets a permanent job before even considering renting out your flat.
sadly I have learned to look at the worst case scenario: I can see you renting out your flat; moving to london, spending your savings on rent, no chance of any LHA for a property here, as you have a property elsewhere ( I think this rule is still current) If the tenant misses payments will you struggle to meet the mortgage as well ? Have you requested letting the property to your lender, some will put your rate up; you need to do the sums I think, on the worst case scenario.
If you are confident with your skills, why not start applying for jobs now? If one of you has a permanent job to come to then there is less risk in renting out your flat ( as you know for sure you wont need to return)
I came to London with £300 12 years ago and was working by the end of the week. sadly it really isnt like this anymore, and its a lot harder to get work and stay in work .
That said its a wonderful place, not for everyone but then where is?! Well aint funny how its the little things in life that mean the most? Not where you live, the car you drive or the price tag on your clothes.

Yes my OH would also be looking for work he works in IT. I think it would be more competitive for IT jobs.
That's is about the amount we were going to save before going to London and is a feasible amount.
What does LHA mean?
I didn't actually think about if a tenant didn't pay the rent thanks for pointing that out. It wouldn't be a huge problem though as the mortgage I pay is barely anything.
I want to wait until we have the money saved before applying for jobs. I agree one of us getting a permanent job prior to letting out our apartment is probably a good idea could be expensive going back and forth to London for interviews though.
Thanks for your help0
