but would it be worth doing? you might be able to live in London on it but could you do anything else apart from survive?

As I said it depends how someone spends their money, but it's irrelevant for the OP as they are not doing this on 1 salary. Doing this type of job and living out of London wouldn't make much difference as the salary would drop drastically so you'd still have a semi similar type of lifestyle.

Thanks, every job I look at I have the experience in everything they ask for I'm currently working as a personal assistant and the PA jobs that are about £25k sound a lot like what I am doing now except I seem todo more.
The only thing i really worry about is the amount of people with actual qualifications as I only have very basic qualifications.

As to those who hate London, everytime I visit there I just feel at home and don't want to ever leave I go there every chance I get I love it but I suppose everyone is different.

25k even for a team sec job, if you want to go PA then 25-30k is reasonable for a fairly ok job, even though they'd expect more harder work/OT at the higher end of that and financial sector/city higher than that. Re qualifications, when I've had temps covering me they never have any sec qualifications now, they all seem to be grads, I'd say people with relevant qualifications are quite rare/older. They seem more concerned someone has worked in that particular sector of industry before, which I find a bit stupid as this type of work never used to be like that but they really pigeon hole secs these days it seems.

London has a massive amount of office Jobs but also a massive amount of people hunting every job. If you have the skills there is no reason you cannot get a decent paying job.

Also to the people saying its too expensive, I've lived here since 2003 and I earnt £130 a week when I first moved here and I survived, now I earn a lot more but its perfectly possible to live on a budget in London.

Regarding London itself I absolutely love it, Best Restaurants, Best Theatres, best Mueseums and theres no culture or cuisine that cant be found somewhere

Edit Although to be fair I hate kids and dont want any so me and my girlfriend dont have to worry about any if that

I always wanted to live in London too and eventually moved here last year and I love it. I live in Central London so everything is on my doorstep so I don't need to run a car which cuts the cost of living. I don't earn a lot either. As for jobs, it's the same as anywhere else.. lots of people apply for each job and you just have to compete. I'd say go for it, you won't regret it, I haven't.

I wouldn't want to live in London again, but I love going back to visit to work for spells of time. Living in it can dull you to the best bits you only 'do' as an outsider, not when it is on your doorstep. Rents are very expensive, and conditions cramped, but then you save time on the daily commute if you stay somewhere small but central, and that is quite valuable in itself, being able to walk and not cram on the tube at peak time.

But then other things are CHEAP in London, you have plenty of cheap areas with markets discount stores and poundshops (where I live now has neither, so you pay much much more for stuff in the high-street retailers). Public transport is very cheap there compared with many other areas, but keeping a car is expensive. Museums are free and awesome, there are world class galleries, and you can see West End shows cheap by being able to visit the tkts booth in person when the returns are released!

£25k will be doable, but you won't be in easy street by a long chalk. If you like going out a lot (and that is aprt of the temptation of London), you will feel it pinch, but the simple pleasures are cheap or free. I loved 'discovering' London, it has so much history, so much depth, so many layers that you cannot get bored of it if you make the effort to explore a little.

Horrible nasty place where nobody speaks English; there's a lot of foreigners as well.

So you're prejudiced against non-english speakers and foreigners?

    lol

I'm glad you didn't let that one slip. I think he's just trying to cover all bases -- making it absolutely clear that he doesn't like non-English speakers, but also dislikes foreigners who are able to speak English.

Personally, I consider the fascinating diversity is one of the best things about living in London, but I suppose people have different attitudes to these things....
  • Thank you all so much I am now very much looking forward to giving it a go at the ed of the day what's the worst that can happen it doesn't work out and we move home I think I would regret it more if I didn't do it. We are going to say enough money to budget for not bein able to find work for 6 months. The job that I am looking for is k ly for me my husband would also be looking for work with something around this salary so we would be living on around £50,000.
I have looked in to it as much a I can at the moment and it does look doable.

The nightlife is not what attracts us to London I hate clubbing even though we are a young couple the thing we love to do most and do Jay about everynight we are in London is go out for a nice dinner and take a stroll through Leichester Square, Picidilly Circus, Covent Gardens places like that and absolutely love all the street entertainers and the diversity of everyone there.

Whenever visiting London we feel free and at home and feel like we really belong here. We have alwas said we would move here if we won the lottery but recently thought why does it have to be a dream that never comes true.

Trying to find areas that are nice with sensible rental prices (as sensible as London goes) is difficult to know where is nice but I'm sure with a little more research I will be able to understand the areas more.

I am thinking of next time going on holiday instead of staying in fancy hotels may look for a holiday rental for a couple of weeks and go look at apartments and jobs.

Thanks again for all of your help it really means so much. I think everyone should try and make their dreams come true we are only here once.

    Thanks

OP I can't give you any advice on office jobs but as for moving to London, if that's your dream then go for it. As you've said we only get one shot at life so make the most of it. I loved the 3 years I spent living in London and once I've finished my PhD hopefully I'll be back. There is a certain 'buzz' about London you don't get anywhere else. There are also enough green spaces/parks etc to escape from the crowds. Good luck!!
