RSPCA not willing to help

  • Be who you are, say what you feel, those who mind don't matter, those who matter don't mind.
They say that talking to yourself is a sign of mental illness. So I talk to the cats instead.

please do not keep going to the cats protection with sob stories of not being able to afford to get a cat neutered.
You want the animal then pay for it like everyone else does. If you cant afford it then leave well alone as you would never be able to afford the everyday care of food, vaccinations, worming and defleaing.

  • If you can't provide for it's medical needs then do not adopt it!

Vax2002 is also way off. RSPCA officers are not allowed to euthanise cats on the street, they are taken to a vet to have this done in an humane way. Not just injected in the van and dumped in a bin!

I volunteer for animal charities by transporting, usually dogs, but sometimes cats, to non-destruct pounds. I am fully aware that for every animal I put my little bit of effort into, 10 will be put to sleep. The problem the RSPCA have is that they are the first go to organisation for everyone with sick, abandoned pets and wildlife. They can't do everything for everyone and yes they do have a destruct policy, but it's known about and yes it's done as well as such a thing can be. The RSPCA is not perfect, but the staff are there because they care for animals and try to do the best they can within the organisations stated policy.

Bottom line, too many animals and not enough people to give them a decent home.

The onl y time an RSPCA inspector would do that is if he knew the cat was suffering so badly it would be cruel to make it wait even the distance to get it to a vet.And rightly so,the same with any animal it rescued.

The RSPCA gets the blame for putting down unwanted animals. The fault lies with the greedy and selfish people who either breed in the hope of making a quick profit,or won't get their animal neutered.Or the cruel owner who throws out the animal and expects it to fend for itself or someone else to pick up the expense.

Either way it is hardly the fault of the RSPCA.They are there to prevent suffering and if there is no hope of finding the animal a home because all shelters are full to bursting already, what are they supposed to do.Turning it back out on to the streets is not an option.

I know they don't get it right every time but they are restricted by finances and what the law allows. If ALL breeding was stopped until every animal had a loving home they might then be able to concentrate on their original purpose,to prevent cruelty .

Try the Cats Protection - they may give you a neutering voucher, and/or a cheap id chip

Adopting a kitten off the street is the same as getting a kitten by any other means, in terms of the fact that you will need to pay for it's veterinary care.

The RSPCA do deserve bashing in some cases, but not this one - IMHO it is the OP's responsibility if they choose to keep the kitten.
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Have you tried to find out if this cat has an owner who may be looking for it?

Its likely the RSPCA would in fact put the kitten down as they now spend less of their resources on rescuing strays. I am a bit shocked to be honest that you could demand they pay for the cats neutering and then say you got some free food out of them. Bit of a nerve that I thought! Think twice whether you can afford to look after this animal. There are constant ongoing expenses and if you are unable to meet these for may be 16 years hence then it may sadly be better for the cat to be pts humanely now.

Have to disagree with that vax. When we called them about a "nest" of feral kittens in a neighbours hedge, the only thing they could suggest was sending out an inspector to pts them. As it happens we found a feral cat rescue who came and took them away to be domesticated and found homes.

They put them to sleep but not just in the back of the van, they catch them, take them to a vet who then pts.

  • As mentioned above, cats protection will offer free neutering even if you are not in receipt of benefit...you qualify if you have been feeding a stray on the street for at least 2 weeks. Check their web site and then call local participating vets to book direct. Pets At Home do first vaccines plus a chip for £55 which is very reasonable, and you can buy flea/wormer from them at the first appointment.
You have done a lovely thing by offering this cat a home, but I am afraid there are still costs attached.
