2 computers

I have got 1 computer set up on broadband but I am going to get another for the mrs.
Th computers will be in the same room.I am not on wireless at the moment
I am with AOL
What are my options with linking them.What equipment would I need if I stayed NON -wireless.And would this slow the broadband down ??If so by how much.
Also would both computers have a static or dynamic IP address.
I would prefer both pc's to be dynamic as it helps with matched betting.

Ring AOL up, ask them for a free wireless router (which you can use wired as well, if you have ethernet cards in both PC's).

Won't make any difference to your speed, unless they are both going like the clappers at the same time, and won't affect your external ip address.

When you say ethernet cards.Do you just mean the slot where the ethernet cable goes in the pc.If you do my modem at the moment has this going in to my pc.
You think AOL will give me a FRee wireless router.I presume I would need to sign up to the wireless package ?
What extra cables or connections would I need ?

They give them away free nowadays, others on here have called up, got them, and some have also haggled a reduced price out of them. If you join as a new customer, you get them now, so if they say no, threaten to cancel and rejoin.

You normally get on ethernet cable with the router, so you will need one more unless you go wireless.

If you don't want to use wireless, turn it off when you get the router, to make your network secure.

By ethernet, I mean network interface card, which is different to usb and modem leads.

How do I find out if I have got a network interface card .
At the moment I have not got the foggiest.

I have definately got an ethernet cable attached so does that mean I must have one ?

provided it is ethernet/lan and not a phone/modem cable, the latter looks very similar, but it smaller

Has anybody got any tips for getting the free wireless router from AOL
I rang and they insisted I would have to subscribe to the £14.99 a month package.I am currently on the £9.99 package.He said they used to give them away on that package but not any more.

Tell them that you're leaving usually does the trick.

As for the OP - a non wireless connection will actually be faster than a wireless one along with being more secure.

Also I think I am tied in to a years contract with Aol.
Best place to get a good wireless router.?
Also I need to buy another computer.only needs to be basic .Dell's most basic one without a moniter is £280 at the moment.
I have got a spare moniter so not having a moniter is acceptable.
Any other better deals out there for basic computer ???
