BIOS password

I was always told to take out the cmos battery for a few minutes and that would lose any password.
Used to be true, but these days in most laptops the password is stored in an eprom chip with non-volatile memory, ie data is not lost when power is lost. These eprom chips can be rewritten, but is not easy, and certainly not for the average joe.0 -
SOLUTION -1.
You can reset bios password in two ways.
1. Open back cover of laptop,
2.Pull cmos cell from motherboard, wait for 15 minutes then put it back.
3. The computer will not ask password.
SOLUTION -2.
Using jumper settings
1. Find the jumper on the motherboard named clear cmos it has 3 pin .1-2-3
2. Place jumper in 2-3 position.
3. Then put it in 1-2 position again.
SOLUTION -3.
You can also check another Bios Password Recovry Tool
I hope it helps.

It's a laptop so, in this case, completely irrelevant.0 -

Originaly, they did try a incorrect password 3 times and its locked it.

thanks for your suggestions, but we have the precious photos & recordings......a laptop is replaceable.sadly, he isnt.0 -
How To Reset Dell BIOS Password
To reset the BIOS password on a Dell, you must first shut down the computer, turn it on its side on a flat surface, then remove the side panel. You should discharge any static you might be carrying by touching the bare metal surface of the case, then unplug the computer.
The BIOS password reset jumper pins will usually be located near the CMOS battery–a nickle-sized battery on the motherboard. There should be two sets of jumpers near each other. One will be the CMOS jumper and the other will be the password (PWRD) jumper. Each will have three pins. Locate the password jumper and find the plastic clip that is covering pins 2 and 3. Remove the clip and move it to pins 1 and 2. Let it sit there for a couple of minutes, then move it back to pins 2and 3.
Replace the cover, plug it back in and boot the PC. It should now boot without a BIOS password.0 -

That may be true for a desktop, but if you read two posts above you will see this is a laptop with an eprom chip that cannot be reset by removing cmos batteries or changing non-existant jumpers.
I think it is now well established that they need Dell software to reset rhe "bios" password.0 -
I have recently lost my young brother(43) he was a pc whiz, now his laptop a dell latitude D830 o/s xp pro,has loads of photos on and music recordings of himself,to us the important things, amongs other stuff.
it needed a password, his partner tried 3 times with wrong pw, and locked it up.i rang dell ,it wasnt in warrenty, but for £29 they could have given me a password that had a 80% chance of working.my son in law said daylight robbery.he has put all files, photos etc on to external hard drive,(by some cable to his desktop)i said flatten the laptop and put files back on,but he said it cant be saved bios is protected.
so impotantly, the files are saved, but can the laptop be saved???
Im suprised dell would say it only had a 80% chance of working?
They can generate the master password for lattitudes, based on service tag, with 100 percent certainty surely?
What do you means its locked now? Cant you switch it off/on and get back to the password screen again?
What are you seeing?
Can you pm the service tag and express service code?[greenhighlight]but it matters when the most senior politician in the land is happy to use language and examples that are simply not true.
[/greenhighlight][redtitle]
The impact of this is to stigmatise people on benefits,
and we should be deeply worried about that[/redtitle](house of lords debate, talking about Cameron)0 -
when we switch it on there is a grey screen, askes for password,if not right it shuts down after about a minute.
it was me that rang them and they did say they had a 80% chance of it working.it ran out of warrenty last year.its a 2007 model.
have pm'd you0 -
http://www.ebuyer.com/179316-startech-2-5-sata-hard-drive-enclosure-with-integrated-usb-cable-sat2510scb this would do the job.
Simple remove the harddrive from the laptop, place it in this enclosure, Plug it in when the computer is loaded. you should then be able to access the drive.0
