I have recently lost my young brother(43) he was a pc whiz, now his laptop a dell latitude D830 o/s xp pro,has loads of photos on and music recordings of himself,to us the important things, amongs other stuff.
it needed a password, his partner tried 3 times with wrong pw, and locked it up.i rang dell ,it wasnt in warrenty, but for £29 they could have given me a password that had a 80% chance of working.my son in law said daylight robbery.he has put all files, photos etc on to external hard drive,(by some cable to his desktop)i said flatten the laptop and put files back on,but he said it cant be saved bios is protected.
so impotantly, the files are saved, but can the laptop be saved???

Try some of these backdoor passwords - you'll need the BIOS maker (Award etc)

If you can track down a copy of the DellBiosBoot CD/Floppy from somewhere it should zip through it like a hot knife through butter. It's basically the software Dell use to retrieve/clear CMOS passwords using the embedded Service Tag number.0

If you get past that you may have an additional windows password to get past.0

I was always told to take out the cmos battery for a few minutes and that would lose any password.0
