Please please please can somebody give me some advice...

My contract runs out in November on my crappy little Nokia, I resisted iphones previously because of the cost, but now really really want one.

I'm with 3 who seem to be about the cheapest for an iphone.
I can get an i phone 3gs 8gb for free for
-£20 a month with 500mb data
-£25 a month with 1gb data

Or the i phone 4 16gb
- £69 + £35 a month all you can eat data
- free + £35 a month 1gb data

I don't really need all you can eat data, I'm not going to be downloading films, or even music (I'd do that on the computer then transfer to phone).
The text and minutes with all of the packages are more than enough for me.
I currently pay £18 for my Nokia, so £35 seem like a huge jump!

The £20 a month i phone 3 seems to be good as obviously a lot cheaper, but am I going to be tied for 2 years into a phone that has already been superceeded (sp?), and about to be again???

The lady I spoke to at 3 said that lots of people are taking the 3 handset, and then upgrading the software to that of the 4. Apparently this is free?? And easy to do?? So am I right in thinking the userbility of the phone would then become like that of the 4, but you'd obviously still have the screen ppi/camera & resolution of the 3 handset.

I've just been looking on the Apple site and reading about iOS 5, I'm not in the slghtest bit technical but am I right in thinking this is what the i phone 5 will have on it? I read somewhere that you'll be able to upgrade the software of the 4 & 3gs to the iOS 5.

Is it likely that the cost of the 3gs& 4 will come down once the 5 is released?

If you've read to the end of my ramblings then I thank you for your patience , and if you're able to answer any of my queries, then you are a saint! :A
Thanks
Sarah

I wouldn't bother with the 3gs, it's outdated. No matter what software Apple releases for it, they are never going to improve the hardware which is the main difference between the phones.

£20x 24m = £480. I wouldn't spend so much money on a handset that is already two years old when you start the contract and will be four years old when it ends.

If you can't bring yourself to spend so much money on the 4, have you looked at other phones such as ones running Android? You'll find much more cost effective deals on phones equivalent in terms of specification to the iPhone 4, maybe even higher.
Have I helped? Feel free to click the 'Thanks' button. I like to feel useful (and smug). ;)

She has a very strange way of putting it - there is no software specific to the iPhone 4 - all new iPhones run the same operating system (iOS) and are updated in the same way. I'd expect any iPhone bought today to have the most recent version of iOS on it, iOS 4 is months old.

iOS 3 isn't just for iPhone 3GSs, iOS 4 isn't just for iPhone 4s, iOS won't be just for iPhone 5s.

Yes it's free and easy to update the software on an iPhone.

Like the previous poster, personally I wouldn't bother with an iPhone 3GS, with the iPhone 5 about to be released it will be 2 generations old.

Maybe wait until the iPhone 5 is out, then buy an iPhone 4? I imagine the price will drop then.

Saying all that, it does depend what you want the iPhone to be able to do - if all you want it to do is play music and search the internet, an iPhone 3GS would do fine.

Thanks, I'm a bit hopeless at all things technical and wasn't sure about this.
