The manufacturer is liable for 10 years for a faulty product.

Depends what you mean by that.........

Do you mean if a product becomes unsafe as a result of an inherent fauly? If so then the manufacturer would be liable, however you would need to prove the fault existed at the time of purchase.

If the product has caused injury, the claim must have begun within 3 years, and after ten years can no longer successfully sue (although a case lasting more than 7 yrs would be ridiculous)

Do you mean generally? If so you can pursue a claim for up to 6 years. That doesn't mean the manufacturer is liable for 6 years though. If for example you bought a radio for £20, you would be lucky to win a case if it developed a fault after 3 years.
  • Yes but threatening to claim and having the prospect of winning may sometimes be enough for the company to settle.

but what has happened to it in three years.any chance your mum got it wet. its a lot of iffs to risk money on. but good point on the fire bigade.
  • What material is the worktop made from?

If it's one of the newer resin types such as Corian then it is possible for these to be repaired. They can have the damaged portion cut out and a new piece put in its place and if done properly, the join is just about invisible. (I know this as I recently had it done on a Corian worktop).

If it's a laminated chipboard worktop then as already mentioned, getting it replaced will be the best bet, and provided it's a colour that's still easily available, shouldn't be too difficult or expensive.
