Oh, really wish I could see it! Sounds fabby dooooo. Was it expensive? I really want silk for the skirt of my dress.

It was really cheap! :money: I got 5 1/2 metres for £40 :j My mum and I went to Birmingham rag market and found a shop just next to the markets with some amazing stuff over four floors; we wandered round for ages going "oooh, look at this one, that'd look good as a jacket..." etc before actually getting down to looking for what we went for!

What is your dress again? x

I bought mine from a seller on eBay in Hong Kong. It was based on an Alfred Angelo dress (1136 I think, I didn't know that when I ordered it).

    There's pictures of it here:

    http://s1178.photobucket.com/albums/x374/lisajane_8482/Wedding Dress/

The dress is very good quality (I had my aunt who is a seamstress look it over) and I do like the dress but I'm not sure if I, in all honesty, like it on me. I think this is partly down to the fact that the dress is badly creased and the only time I have seen it on me is in the photo's which aren't the greatest quality but that’s a combination of my poop iPhone camera plus my Mum’s lacking photography skills.

After Christmas I’m going to try it on again with a petticoat and have it laced up properly this time and get some (hopefully) better photo’s to give me a better idea. The dress cost £68 + £30 in import fees so if I don’t like it it’s not a great loss but the money we have saved would mean we can have a nicer wedding breakfast.

Wanchai I want this dress so much, not for my wedding, but for me just to swan about in feeling fabulous :) never going to happen, but a girl can dream...

When I am feeling more proactive I shall upload a pic of my wedding invites, I have made them in recycled paper using twine and stamps and ink. I like them, and they have justified my impulse purchase of a sheet of rubber stamps which cost an (in my opinion) extortionate £15 a sheet! But they were so beaufitul and I have used them happily, and will use them for table plans/name places etc as well :T
:) Trying to be good and watch the pennies, but guilty of falling off the wagon every so often! :p

Do try it on properly and let the creases fall out etc beforehand. It's amazing the difference it will make. If you still don't like it, maybe sell it and look for another one? xxx

I would love it too! It is so dreamy :)

I cannot WAIT to see your invites - they sound similar to what I would like for mine :)

What are rubber stamps and where did you buy them? xx

I went to the fabric shop yesterday - they have a great selection, I got some swatches to bring to the DM.

BUT then I went to the shop from 2 weeks ago and tried on my favourite dress and loved it so so much (it is perfect) - I am trying to decide now whether to pay £1,300 for it in the shop (eeeek) but know that it'll be perfect, or risk getting the DM to make it (and possibly get it wrong!) for about half that amount.

    Help...

How much do you trust your DM to get it right? Have you seen examples of her work and/or had recommendations?

I've had a glowing recommendation from a colleague who's used her for years - but not for her wedding dress. She didn't know the DM when she was getting married. I've also seen pics of wedding dresses she's made and examples of her current, non-bridal, work.

  • I think it depends how much you have faith in her to make the right dress for you. Also how long would it take to have it made, is it a setup where you can say if you're not happy with it and she can change it at no extra cost? I love the idea of having it made as it's totally unique and also supporting small local businesses. OTH I wouldn't want to spend the next 6 months worrying about it and if that would be the case imho the extra money would be well spent to avoid the worry... Sorry to be so indecisive!
  • Which one's your favourite dress again? Was it the one with the spaghetti straps? (sorry, I'm easily confused :o)

If you've had a recommendation, and have seen examples of her work, and are happy with the initial meeting you had with her in terms of the ideas she had, any sketches she made, and how nice she is (very important!) then I'd say you have nothing to worry about. She will consult you on the design, including any detail, all fabrics used, etc, so you will know what the dress will look like before it's finished. She'll also make a toile (mock-up) of the dress in a cheap fabric to check that you like the design and that it suits you, and to make any alterations to the design before she makes the real thing.

It's entirely up to you, and please feel free to ignore me (I won't be offended, honest) but I personally would rather have a dress custom- designed and made to suit my body shape perfectly than buy a (more expensive) dress that is perfect in some places but not in others.
