Hi there
Newbie technophobe looking for some advice from this excellent forum :T
I want to work through the 'How to speed up' thread on my 6 year old Dell Inspiron 3000 but thought I'd start by uninstalling useless stuff first.
I changed ISP from AOL to Zen recently but have kept my AOL email addresses so use Chrome to log into AOL regularly. My question - is it ok to uninstall all AOL programmes (AOL connectivity service; AOL spyware protection;Computer check up 4.0; AOL 9.1)?
With AOL I got McAfee Personal Firewall Plus free. Also using AVG free antivirus. I want to get rid of both McAfee (I know about the MCPR.exe as I managed that on my Netbook) & AVG and install MSE instead. Is this a wise move?

Yes all that should be fine.
I'd first go into safe mode, and use Revo Uninstaller though to get rid of all the AOL stuff.

Also AVG has its own remover program (best used after you've used the standard uninstaller):

Alternatively you could backup what you want to keep, and reinstall Windows.0 -
Thanks Russ
Why do you recommend safe mode?0 -
It stops some of the AOL processes running.
If they are running you won't be able to delete them.0 -
re mse - no install avast free instead.!!

You don't need any AOL software to use an AOL email address (if you must).
I don't think that AOL have revamped their clunky old software in years now.No free lunch, and no free laptop
