19 years old, finding it impossible to find car insurance

Hey,

I've recently passed my driving test and looking to buy myself a car to enable me to get to university and back. I'm looking for a vehicle worth around £3000, say a 1.2 Ford Fiesta.

The cheapest quote I have been able to find so far is £6,800 for 12 months cover, which is with LV. Many other quotes are in excess of £15,000.

There is no way I can afford to pay prices like this. I have friends paying between £1500 and £3000, but I'd be lucky to even find a quote as low as that. I've been constantly searching and can't anything reasonable. Can anyone help or give any advice? I'm slowly losing hope.

Thanks
Jamie

  • see what other cars are like before buying one (a 1.0 engine might be worth a try). Also try high excess as although if you claim you'll get less back if you don't claim for a number of years you'll have saved that amount on the premium. Have you tried all the companies on the top of the insurance link above too to compare them all?

Fiesta will be hard to insure for a person at 19, As some/or most use z-tec engines and if your car is Fiesta sport or in that category with a 3 door, that is all taken into account when getting insurance not just the size of the engine.

Also where you stay could have an impact on the price of insurance.

have you tried fire and theft rather than fully comp.

It is possible to get it lower, change the car, change the excess, just play around with the quotes.
  • small engine doesn't always mean you'll get a cheap quote; try an unfashionable car like a Rover, a Volvo or a Daewoo etc as they're less likely to be a high risk car for a young driver.
  • Thanks for the advice guys.

I've been trying all night, trying all sorts of vehicles, cover type, changing the excess etc. I simply cannot find any cover for less than £6000. It's even the same on a 1L Smart Car. Any more suggestions?

    Thanks

Have you asked yourself why your premiums are so high?

Picking trendy cars that young people drive will not help, each car has a risk factor.
One lad round here they wanted £4,200 for a 1 litre 12v corsa
he got a volvo v40 1.9 TD insured for £1200
They really target boy racer type cars.
    Buy a Grandad mobile

  • Hi
We took out a multi car policy with Admiral, and my son's and daughters car insurance was much lower than any were else, and because I was a named driver on is car and I have had no accidents it brought the price down even more. Hope this helps :)

Have you tried adding a parent as a named driver?
No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

Thats a good idea, also have you tried looking at small brokers rather that the larger companies, such as footman james and sky insurance, they are very good usually, i'm with sky and they were a good £350 cheaper than anywhere else at £750.
