Average electricity bill for a 4 bedroom flat

  • No, if you've got access to the meter and have the roken to top it up yourselves then it sounds ok. It just makes me wonder why they bother with putting £10 on themselves as part of the rent each week. The more usual way would just be to leave it up to you to put whatever you want/need on it. £10 a week probably won't cover your usage, but as long as you can put extra on if you start to run low then that should be fine.

Though the suspicious side of me says check with the supplier once you've been in a little while to make sure that those weekly £10 are actually going through to them and aren't being put on in a non-standard way.

Yes, I did wonder why they would bother putting the 10.00 on themselves.. as it says in the contract 'rent includes electricity of 10.00'- but i thought that meant- per person..so that would be 40:00 a week...but thats not the case it seems!!!
I don't know who the supplier is though :(, all i know is that it is by a prepayment meter.
  • Just give any supplier a call and say you want to know who your supplier is. They'll take your address and look up who supplies there for you on the industry database. The only thing to look out for with that is that if the company you called don't supply there, they'll probably try to convince you to change to them.

I'll give that a go! thanks! Realistically though, do you think we will massively go over the 10 p/w?? a few quid I wouldn't mind as such anything more than that and i'd be worried! am living with 3 other girls and one of them is hardly ever there!! the letting people said that on average a 4 bed apartment used around 10.00 p/w, but I'm not sure.

And of course if the leccy goes off, your gas CH will cease to work...

really?! i thought the gas was seperate from the electricity?! it appears not!! Can't believe that the letting people that from their records that on average a 4 bed flat uses 10 p/w of electricity. thats another expense that i don't really need!!!
  • It all depends on what you use really. £10 a week is pretty much what you need to pay if you use 3300kWh a year, which is the official average consumption for Britain. Whether that covers you all depends on the area you live in (as prices vary from region to region), the tariff you're on, which company it's with and, most importantly, whether or not you use more or less electric than an average British household.

If you're students then my guess would unfortunately be more as the washing machine is likely to be on a lot, plus multiple computers, music players, etc. all start to mount up.

Well the washer/dryer facilities are in a communal area and so won't be used by the electricity allowance and also am living with 3 other girls- but 1 of them is hardly ever there and i'll be in the library mostly as i study better there!..so that might reduce the cost may be??
  • You might be fine then. Unfortunately it's not someting that you can tell in advance. It's really just a 'wait and see' situation, plus make sure you keep an eye on the credit on the meter for the first few weeks. Also keep in mind that, while it's not as seasonal as gas, people still tend to use a bit more electric in winter than in summer, so you'll need to be ready for it to go up over the next few months.

You won't go massively over as long as no one uses an electric heater. As long as everyone doesn't use the hairdryer, straighteners, oven, electric blanket on permanently or anything else to do with heat too much. It was only winter 09-10 that £10 a week would be fine but prices have increases by 50% since then so it may be up to £15. Assuming you are on a reasonable tariff. Let's say Ebico prepayment tariff you'll get 70kWh per week for your £10. Divide that by 7 then divide it by 4 is only 2.5kWh per person per day. It's not much. You might and you might not be able to stay within that.

It is seperate but the gas boiler has an electric controller and an electric pump so no electric then no gas. Some duel fuel suppliers will just replace the electric meter with a prepayment meter and add the gas debt to that when a customer is in debt as they know that no electric means no gas.
