Easyjet broke my camera

So I flew with Easyjet recently and they managed to smash my video camera that was in the hold. After reporting this I received an e-mail informing me that:

"Under the terms of the General Conditions of Carriage, I am afraid an airline is not liable for loss of or damage to jewellery, items of value, money, keys, perishable items, electronic equipment, fragile items, metals, silverware, business documents, securities, medications, medical documents, passports and other identification documents or samples."

Is this true? It doesn't seem like there are many things not covered by the list? Any help much appreciated.

  • Claim on your travel insurance.

Yes it is true, that is why it is recommended not to put those things in your case.

  • I would never put anything more breakable than a pair of socks in the hold. Just look out of the airport window and see how they treat your luggage.
  • And thats always assuming your case does nt get broken into like mine in South Africa on transit from International to Domestic...

If your Travel Ins does nt cover, look at your Home insurance... in fact look at both because if you re covered on one you need to decide which is best - pref the Travel ins as you NCD won t be affected on renewal

I never have baggage cover on my travel insurance as my home insurance covers it, as do most home insurance policies

But OP you do need to check/claim off your insurance

Perhaps they did try to steal it - but found it was broken.

But as others have said you should never put anything valuable or essential in checked luggage - and anything fragile is your own responsibility to ensure that it's properly packed.
  • Definitely agree about not putting anything valuable in hold, have you seen the way the bags get thrown about and piled up it's common sense that under those conditions breakable stuff will be broken

  • I agree, don't put items like cameras in your hold luggage, also, Easyjet didn't break your camera, more likely the baggage handlers did and they are not employed by Easyjet they are employed by the airport or handling agent.
I hate football and do wish people wouldn't keep talking about it like it's the most important thing in the world

You should never ever put anything like that in the hold. Usually there are even signs at the airport telling you not to do this.

What if your case got lost? Why didnt you just take it on the plane with you?

Now see this is where a lot of people get confused. Easyjet did not break your camera, the airport handling agents did. The airports supply the luggage wreckers. I know this is being pedantic, and I don't mean to be flippant, but I always here "the airline lost my luggage, the airline wrecked my bag, etc".As others have said. Go through your home contents insurance.
BTW just because it is in their T&C's doesn't mean it is enforceable. There is such a thing as unfair terms, and with airlines only allowing you a very limited amount of hand luggage taken on board, sometimes you just have to place valuable items in the hold. As you say there are very little things that would be covered.
The common law of business balance prohibits paying a little and getting a lot. If you deal with the lowest bidder, it is well to add something for the risk you run, and if you do that you will have enough to pay for something better.
