How can I tell which phone has the features I want?
I'm looking for a new contract as mine is going from £21 to £35 next month, and I know I can get a much better deal. The question is just which phone to go for. I'd like one that can use the new technology (QR codes, barcode photographing, and apps), and also has the obvious things like a good camera and instant email notification, but I'm a bit stuck in my ways and ideally would like a nokia. If nokia's technology is too far behind to do these things I'd consider a blackberry or failing that an iphone (but I dont like apple, feels like paying for a label I don't want!). Can anyone make any suggestions?

I think any android does what you want, but cameras vary.

Some (not only) SE smartphones have very good cameras.

Nokia are largely focussing on Windows Phone 7 in the future, which is up and coming but a bit light on apps. The deal between Nokia and MS should fix that as they are merging app stores. The cameras are decent but I don't think they will be too cheap!
That said their Symbian based phones are still coming out and it has improved a lot, especially with the newest release, but I don't know what handsets it will be installed on other than the new releases.
Not a big fan of BB myself. To be honest unless you BBM a lot (know a lot of people also on BBM) there are better options in my opinion.
IPhone is iPhone! The 3GS is becoming very cheap now and still packs a lot in. I've seen it free on a £21 PM tariff for 100 mins, 500 texts, and 500 meg data. The iPhone 4 is still well above that in cost but will drop a bit when the 5 is out.
Android is my personal fave. It has a huge range of apps, many free. The original HTC Desire is very cheap now but still capable. Be careful of screen sizes as low res screens don't run all the apps (the original wildfire really suffered, and the wildfire s does to a certain extent). I would look for one with a 1Ghz processor or better too, as below that some apps really chug along.0
