Hi there

I've finally decided to spend a little time trying to get our old desktop computer back up to speed... don't use it as much now but it's much better than our laptops for my partner's work - dual monitor setup etc...

Anywhoo... I've started to go through the steps in the sticky and here is a Hijackthis log and some system information if anyone has a chance to have a look and give me some guidance...

    The best way of cleaning up a slow or badly infected machine is to backup all your data to an external drive, and do a factory restore using the factory restore partition (see manual or manufacturers website) or Windows disc. The alternative is to do it manually as follows (the list may look daunting, but should take less than an hour of effort (apart from virus scans)) :-

    uninstall avg and stopzilla, install avast free version http://www.filehippo.com/download_avast_antivirus/

    uninstall vnc if you don't need it. uninstall nokia software unless you need it.

    why is there sun nfs software installed?

    are you using a logitech camera?

    In internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging to stop this running

    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\VS7DEBUG\MDM.EXE

    Install and run ccleaner (untick the google toolbar during the install). Untick the "windows log files" box, under the system heading before cleaning. Also Tick the java cache tick box under CCleaner, applications, internet to wipe the java cache which sometimes hides infections. http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim

    Install and run startuplite, accept suggested changes - http://www.malwarebytes.org/StartUpLite.exe

    Disable ctfmon - control panel, regional and language options,languages, details, advanced, tick the Turn off advanced text services, ok

    Click the java icon in control panel, advanced, misc - untick java quick starter, and untick place icon in task bar

    Click the java icon in control panel, updates, untick check for updates

    Download and install cleanmem http://www.pcwintech.com/cleanmem (download direct download). In windows explorer, go to c:\windows\tasks, click on the clean system memory task, schedule, advanced, and change it from every 30 minutes to every 5 minutes, then ok, ok. Find c:\program files\cleanmem\mini_monitor, run it and right click the icon (near the clock) to set it to automatically run at startup, show percentage to keep an eye on your ram use. If your machine is still slow after doing everything listed, post your commit charge and installed physical ram details from task manager performance

    Unless you need them running all the time, use the startup tab in msconfig to disable these items from running at startup (they can always be run manually if needed)

You may get prompted asking if you want to run the free 14 day trial during install, I suggest you decline this offer, as it will slow things down.     Making any changes to a PC setup always comes with a slight risk of something going wrong, the worse case scenario is an unbootable PC - ideally you should have got a backup of important data on dvd or external disk, and a disk image backup (http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.asp) or windows disc/factory restore partition available before you start. In the unlikely event that anything does go wrong, post on another pc for advice.

    Am still working my way through it all. Most of it is done and I'm now running a full Malwarebytes scan so it will be a while yet! My commit charge is now much lower - will post full results later when everything has been attended to.

    I was unable to remove a couple of things via "add/remove programs" as they were not listed; however I did "fix" them in Hijackthis and disabled them as a service in msconfig (I think!) - Is this ok? It was the remnants of Stopzilla and Nokia..?

    You should be running XP SP3, not SP2, and IE 8, not IE 6 (latter will now be very insecure)
    That indicates to me that all your Windows Updates are way out of date.
    Do a full manual update once you've got a clean system.
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)

    go into c:\windows\tasks and delete the googleupdate task, and run services.msc and disable google update services.

    peak commit is high, and divxupdate is still running, have you rebooted since cleaning up?

    flipshare service is running, do you need it?

    is it running/booting any better?

    when it appears to be running ok after a reboot, turn system restore off, then back on again to remove old restore points (as you had infections in there), create a manual restore point

    you may wish to backup, just in case the service pack causes any issues - (it shouldn't)

    did you do this one

    In internet explorer, click on tools, internet options, advanced, disable script debugging to stop this running

    (may need to do it on all accounts if you have more than one user)

    Presume you have an epson printer?

    tick and fix these using hijackthis

    Thanks, I really appreciate all of your help.

    I've deleted the google update task and disabled the google update services. Have stopped Flipshare running - duh, was convinced I needed it running when all I actually need is for it to be there to activate when I need it! Can't find where divxupdate is running? Not showing as a service in msconfig and is already unticked in "startup"?

    The machine has been rebooted a few times now since various parts of the clean and seems to be running much better... still not amazing but a remarkable improvement. Spoke to my brother earlier (who used to own the PC) and he reckons it used to have 2 GB RAM and that maybe it's "blown" a stick... maybe why it's a bit sluggish still if the Windows install was done with more RAM??? I dunno :think:

    I think you'd know if it had blown a chip. I presume there's a zero missing off this - Physical memory - 104604

    if your peak commit is below installed ram, more ram wont make any noticeable difference. The last post, it is only using 20%

    it should be booting in around 45 seconds, and running speedily, there's not much bloat left apart from richvideo, logitech software, and bonjour

    is divx still there after a reboot?

    IE might be faster, and use less ram than chrome, boot and launch each browser to compare commit.

    Actually, when I said I'd removed the Epson software I meant I'd tried to remove it but there was no option within add/remove when I clicked on it - it just brought up a window with a greyed out OK button... was unable to do anything with it - any suggestions?
