letting agency problems....

(sorry if this appears in the site cannot now find where it was posted if it did get posted). i took on a letting agency to rent out my property. i got messed around by them quite a lot . i said i would pay half of the commission now and the other half after everything was sorted (they still had not finalised the tenancy agreement with my tenants though my tenants and I were already happy with the contract we had done - the agency were on their 3rd set of contracts). anyway to cut a long story short they then decided to get their solicitors involved to take me to court for not paying their solicitors fees (basically i paid the outstanding amount even though the contract was not finished but they decided to write a horrible solicitor letter to me). i overpaid them too but they never wrote to tell me. I only picked up on it when the solicitor wrote back to me saying that I had not paid and I told them that i had and then the next thing when they went back to their client (the letting agency) they tried to make me pay for their solicitor fees (which I have refused and told them they owed me anyway). anyway this is now excalating (even though I have proved my points - the solicitors said in the last letter that they did not understand my letter so they decided to take the matter further!!!!!). I cannot understand how they can get away with it. Also the court letters have gone from £500 to over a grand (though their fees were £200 originally|). Also i get letters directly from the courts with different amounts (the last one was £500 and the first one was £1200 or something like this).
I do not like living like this and not sure what to do now. I would rather sort this out and forget it - though I do not like the idea of this agency getting away with things like this because next time it could be a frail old lady. Also i am worried this is affecting my credit rating.
I woudl be grateful if someone could help with this as I am very concerned. thanks in advance.
