Some kind of scam?

  • You can get a UV light keyring to check banknotes, places like poundland used to do them. Maplin also sell them http://www.maplin.co.uk/uv-keyring-torch-35307

I bought a car 2 weeks ago. Called the seller up, agreed to buy, got on train from Manchester to Bristol with £4k in my pocket, got the seller to meet me at the train station, had a test drive and went over the car, handed over my cash and drove back to Manchester a happy bunny.

People do buy cars in this way, so whilst you do need to be careful, don't automatically assume it is a scam.
  • I fleew to Glasgow for my last car!! With £5000 in my purse :rotfl:

Had the drive of my life coming back, best day out ever!

He rang yesterday morning and left a message on the answerphone to say that he definitely wants the car but it's too expensive to come on the train. He wanted us to ring and give him our bank details so he could pay the money by bank transfer and then come and collect it. Needless to say, we've not phoned back.

Clearly some sort of scam, then. I'm not sure what good your bank details could do him, though, as sort code, account name and number are all printed on cheques anyway.

Transfer the money in, collect the car, a few days later the money is re-claimed and tranfered out again.
Even worse the op probably would have been asked to pay the shipper when they came, and the buyer would have transfered money in to cover this. (Which would also vanish)

    Cash or nothing.

Too expensive to come for the car, But will pay by bank transfer and then collect the car?

Does he get a free train ticket with every bank transfer?

I would swap 2 digits on the bank number and give a different address.

He transfers the money from a hacked bank account into the OPs account, and then pays somebody else in cash to collect the car. The bank takes the money back, and the OP gets investigated for fraud. Simples.

He would have paid (probably using someone else's account or something), taken the car (which, remember was too far away for him to come and see!) and then the bank transaction is reversed. We're left with no money and no car.

Or a short notice train is more expensive than driving up with his wife and driving home with two cars?

I live north of London, I bought a car in Cardiff. I knew I wanted it but still had to go over one Saturday view the car, then drive home and pay the guy the following week and then drive over again and drive two cars back.
