More than likely a web page problem for Travelodge; have you not tried emailing/phoning Travelodge direct?
I have tried e-mailing but you need a reservation number - I can't make a reservation so I don't have a number, so I made one up and the e-mail got sent. I just get auto repsonses. Phoning them costs 10p a minute and you are put on hold for a long time and if you eventually get a real person they cannot deal with your query re bookings - you need to book online.
I have already checked with my bank and there are no problems with my card - I have used it to book hotel rooms in the past in much more remote places than England. Perhaps I should just book somewhere else but the rooms were £19 each and every penny counts. Thanks for all the advice.

Just rang as you suggested - answer machine informing customers that phone lines are down to-day but to contact them by e-mail. Back to square one - you need a reservation number to submit your query and if you can't book (which is what I am trying unsuccessfully to do) you don't have a reservation number! and anyway all you get is an automated reponse which doesn't address your query. Just got an e-mail dress for the ceo of Travelodge so I will try that. Thanks again for all the advice - seems like i'm the only one with this problem.

Ok problem solved - got my friend over and we tried to book with her Visa debit card - same thing as mine, message saying invalid card number, then we tried with her credit card and it worked. The difficulty seems to be that Travelodge do not accept some visa debit cards - just out of curiousity has anyone been able to book with visa debit card? Would just like to know for the future. Thanks

Is it an Ulster Bank card perchance? I know they had problems with a number of retailers accepting them - not sure whether they managed to sort it out since.

That just might be the problem - I didn't put in spaces.I've never done that in the past. As I have booked the rooms I needed using a friend's card I can't try this out but curiosity is killing me. thanks again
