I wouldn't be so sure about marrows, in a dry spell they will need constant watering to get decent results

    Leeks & parsnips maybe?

I've just been given my first allotment and collect the keys Wednesday! :j:j

It's in a bit of a mess but no to bad, it even has a greenhouse included in the rent so that's fab, and the greenhouse even has a grape vine growing in it! fab!

I was wondering what to buy first since I'm on a tight budget. I notice Lidl has offers on this week on garden tools etc, are they any good? Also what else should I get? The plot I've been given is huge so my plan is to clear about 1 third properly, get some stuff in the ground then concentrate on the rest of the plot after that.

Any advice appreciated. I was also wondering how you go about making a compost heap and what sort of things you probably shouldnt put in one?? Thanks!

    MOVING THREADS FOR BETTER RESPONSES

Ok just been on the lidl site

I'm going to get me and OH a pair of wellies thats £8.00
    A spade and a fork £16

Think thats all I'll need to start off with? I've also seen a folding wheelbarrow but it's £20 and I can't afford that at the moment, will I get on without one for the time being? Think I may need one to move all the rubbish I dig up to move it??? The chap I've spoken to today has said theres a communal rotivator and he will help me turn the soil over. I'm so excited I really can't wait to get stuck in! I've got some seed potatoes on my dads windowsill sprouting, can't wait to get them in the ground!

hi, hope you don't mind me going off topic slightly, but I was wondering how much time people spend on average on their allotments. I'm thinking of getting one, but I'm single, work full time, and have a dog to walk, so I didn't know how often and for how long you need be there? Is it an everyday thing in the summer, or can you get away with every couple of days?
    Thanks

I work full time, 8-6 mon tue thu and fri, so I'm planning on spending a couple of hours down there on a wed, and then a couple of hours on a sat or a sun.

    What does everyone else do?
