Unable to get my Web Site working - Help !!

Hi All,
thought I would have a play (Big mistake) at setting up my own web site.
Registered my site, navigationexpert.co.uk with 123-Reg and decided to use zoneedit.com to handle the my DNS changes as I do not have a fixed IP.
Changed the NameServers in 123-Reg to point to Zoneedit. They are ns1.nameresolve.com ns2, ns3 and ns4.
According to what I have read that should be all that is required to make it work.
I have noticed that under the control panel for 123 that Under "A, Cname and Text records that the @ and WWW records are set to 94.136.40.82
I have also setup an account under Zoneedit and I think I have set it display a 'Welome' page so I can check that everything works before hosting on my home PC.
When I first registered the domain I got the holding page for 123-Reg. Over the first night this vanished I now I just get Internet Explorer cannot display the web page.
Tried with and without the WW but still no joy.
Site registered 2 days ago.
I am at a total loss as what is wrong.
Anyone can tell where the problem is ?
Many Thanks
Paul T

They usually say give it 24h for the changes to make their way through the internet.
But looks like the WWW (94.136.40.82) is still pointing to 123-Reg. have to transferred the domain over to Zoneedit?
Think sometimes they have to control the host name to make the proper changes but i'm not sure!! Drop zoneedit a support email that might be able to help you more...Laters

can you see your site locally?
ie visit:
http://127.0.0.1
or
http://localhost
it might be that your machine that you are using for a webserver is not set up properly. so no one can see it!Laters

Hi thanks for the replys. Need to use Zoneedit as 123-Reg do not support Dynamic Ip changes.
Can see it locally with http://127.0.0.1 but also setup a couple of test Sites on my Home PC using Dydns Free Sub Domains. They work see - http://northwales.dyndns.info so I know my router etc is handling the traffic
Have dropped a note to Zone edit support. Strange that do not have a Forum like here at MSE sooo much easier
Thanks

Also check your ADSL modem for "Dynamic DNS" settings. that removes the need for you to keep a program running on the server to tell ZoneEdit of any IP changes, the router would do it automatically.
have you set up a "Zone" with zoneedit.com?
click the bottom "edit zone" link on the page that's where you enter in your current IP address for your server.Laters

oh! if you type in your external IP address can you see your site??
Your router might need to be set up to point incoming connections to your server!!
Check to see if the router gives an option for a "DMZ" address (that's a local ip address that is not protected by the firewall and will accept all incoming links) it's not good to keep it active but its good for initial testing...
Add the internal IP address of your server to the DMZ and see if you can access the server using your external IP address..Laters

Getting 123 DNS to work with a dynamic IP....
If you set up a dyndns based URL then you can create a CNAME in the 123reg DNS pointing to that and it will work.
eg...
www CNAME mydynurl.dyndns.org.
(don't forget the . at the end)0 -
As you have set up the NS to point elsewhere from 123-Reg's own you can ignore what it has under its DNS settings. In fact if you do change anything under them it used to result in 123 Reg changing your NS back to their own.
If your sites not displaying and you've allowed 48 hours for the repopulation to occur you need to check the settings you have with ZoneEdit.
Its also worth pointing out that unless you have a commercial line into your home rather than just a domestic ADSL/ Virgin line then hosting your own site will almost certainly be a breach of contract and ISPs used to randomly check the relevant ports to ensure people weren't doing it.
For the cost of a webhost this seems a lot of hassle0 -
Hi All thanks for all the replys,
Never did resolve and never got an answer from Zoneedit.
In the end had another look around the web and found ww.dnsexit.com Took 10 minutes to setup including their own DNS updater changed the nameserver at 123-reg and Bingo ! site works this morning.

Quick question, any particular reason you are hosting your own site?
I know its 'free' to do, but if the site was to get busy it could easily saturate your bandwidth unless you have a high speed connection.
I know its easy to setup a server to host a site but with hosting being so cheap it made more sense to me to use an external hosting company.0 -
Your ISP will very quickly stop your broadband. Again, for the sake of £20 a year why host it yourself, meaning that your PC has to be on 24/7Estate Agent, Web Designer & All Round Geek!0
