windows 8

Despite some unnecessary re-arranging of the control panel, Windows 7 is the first Microsoft OS I've actually liked.
I've traditionally dragged my heels with Windows versions, so I'll be unlikely to jump onto Windows 8 unless I have a clear reason to. I jumped from Vista to Windows 7 at the earliest moment, as Vista really was as bad as everyone said. Windows 7 is noticeably faster than Vista, even without any tweaking.
I've seen demos of Windows 8 and no doubt it'll appeal to many with some of the UI changes, but there doesn't seem to be anything critical. They do promise a faster boot time and some other performance improvements. Overall, it would seem unnecessary to switch for the sake of it.
Which university gives out free versions of Windows?0 -
I still prefer XP to tell you the truth, although 7 is excellent. Previews I saw for 8 looked awful, total copycat of Apple's iOS; not a bad thing in itself, but at least come up with something original of your own...
When I want my OS to work the way they've set it up (splitting the screen up into different panes od buttons, programs etc), I'll use the existing window management function common to most OS' GUIs (Ubuntu, Windows 95/98/2k/XP/7, Mac OS), and multiple monitors. I don't need carp popping up from every which way every time I move the cursor to the edge of the screen so its not in my way.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
IMHO, making anything look like apple is a BAAADDD move - until I found a more "windows"-looking skin, I stopped updating opera past v10 'coz it started looking too "apple"-y.
And as for large smartphone style icons - bleeuurrgghhh
I know I'm over 40 but my eyesight is still more than good enough to use XP on a high screen resolution...as & when it deteriorates, I'll just lower the res a bit
Yes, I still prefer XP to vista or 7, but tbh if it was a choice between vista and apple, even vista would win. If Windows 8 is going to try and clone apple OS, then I'll just use puppy if I can't use XP or 7.....sorry Jobs-worshippers, I just don't get it, or like it
Looks like Gates's mob may have shot themselves not only in the foot, but blown most of their lower leg off with this one............Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple

You don't have to use Metro on a desktop pc if you don't want to. You can switch between it and Explorer easily..0 -
Vista is absaloutley bloody awful IMO lol. 7 I get on with very well but I will have to get 8 to play with it!0

Ok I'll bite and throw in my tuppence worth...
Never had the pleasure (?) of using 95/98/ME, my introduction to computers came with XP in 2001/2 so that was where my learning curve began. I can remember many problems with XP, so much so that I regularly reinstalled the thing at least twice a year and was glad to see the back of it to be honest. Haven't used XP since Vista was released.
Vista = no problems at all, it may have annoyed many especially the enforced UAC prompts, but once I'd learned how to turn that off and rely on my own security software to handle applications 2 years of trouble free computing followed
Same with Windows 7, I can't remember encountering a single problem with 7 yet. Maybe I just RTFM or maybe I'm just lucky.
As for Windows 8, I'll definitely try it when the betas are released to the public and see if I like it enough to change, but for now 7 is pretty much perfect for me.0 -
98SE OK - ME Duffer - XP OK - Vista Duffer - Windows 7 OK so on current form Windows 8 could be like ME and Vista0

And clearly not studying English (or Computer Science, if they expect to get W8 on a free download).
Some Unis have academic access to MDSN which would allow you to download it "free" for certain uses.
Other Unis sometimes extends their volume licence agreements to students as well.0
