Should I buy 12month extended warranty for 4 year old car?

Just purchased a 4 year old Peugeot 207 with 40,000 miles from evans halshaw. They say it comes with free 30 day warranty but can extend it to 12 months for £365. Is it worth taking out the extended warranty?

  • I'm sceptical about these things - usually the things that are likely to go wrong aren't covered. You'll need to check the policy very carefully to see what is covered and decide if it might be useful.

Alternatively you could always just put the premium in the bank to go towards any repair should it be needed.

Probably not. You really need to do your homework on this ie what is covered and what is not. Are there any known faults with this car and if so does the warranty cover them. The warranty companies are very good a dodging common problems as wear and tear.

Shop around and see what after market warrantes are available.

Consider getting an AA check done instead that should pick up any problems.

When is the car due a cambelt factor that in to your decision.

Assuming it is not a wear and tear item you should be covered by the SOGA for anything major for 6 months (especially with a big dealership).

IMHO these warranties have so many exclusions that they are of little value to the purchaser. They are great for the seller, they just wash their hands of their responsibilities and refer you to the warranty company.

Is the warranty provided by Peugeot or by a 3rd party warranty company?

If it's a Peugeot warranty it's probably ok, if it's one of the 3rd party companies you will be buying a few sheets of very expensive toilet paper.

If it breaks down within 6 months tell the garage they sold you a faulty car and get them to fix it, After
6 months get an inspection that says the part was probably faulty when they sold it to you and get them to
    fix it.

Failing that take them to the small claims court.

Used warranties usualy exclude anything that breaks or wears out so rather worthless.

Unless fully backed up by the manufacturer for parts and labour then dont bother.

You know what's missing from these threads, buyers of aftermarket warranties who have had claims honoured.

My neighbour did have his claim honoured about 15 years ago, he paid about £200 for his warranty, his Audi 100 auto box went wrong (there's a first), the garage fixed it at a cost of £1600.

The warranty company paid out the grand total of £200 which was the limit per claim.

I dd! I bought a 3 year-old Renault Megane CC in April and took out a year warranty. Car went in for a service in June and they informed me that the intercooler had a hole in it (almost certainly caused by a stone hitting it). Much to my surprise the warranty was honoured and the intercooler replaced. Having it replaced ay my own cost would have been around £350, i.e. more than the warranty cost.

Good, name them and do them justice.

Would be interesting to hear of any more.

Being a Peugeot, the major problems are likely to be electrical (like complete ECU failure) and most warranties never cover electrical faults.

It's £365 you could keep in your pocket in case anything goes wrong.

Martin (the man who's face is at the top of this webpage) regularly states that warranties are by and large a complete waste of money and £365 is pricy. Shame on Evans Halshaw for not offering an inclusive 12 month warranty, but I suppose you only get that from main dealers (factored into the sale price some would say - but there are some decent dealers out there).
