Cancelling my Vodafone ES Data Contract

Options
I took out a data contract with Vodafone Espana which is a 3G Sim for a dongle. I pay €17,70 per month inc IVA and was told when I bought it that cancelling it just meant giving 30 days notice. What I didn't realise however was that cancelling is near impossible.

I went into the store and while the staff speak an acceptable level of English, I was told to cancel I had to call 22189 from my handset.

I don't have a Vodefone ES handset which was my first clue this wouldn't be all that easy. At the time I didn't give it a second thought, I assumed it would be a case of going to their site and doing it online like is possible in the UK. How wrong I was!

After an hour of attempts I gave up with their site and did some Googling for the answer assuming there would be a number I could call from my landline. No such number appears to exist but rather countless forum posters also struggling.

I'm determined to get this thing cancelled ASAP as it's no longer needed and a waste of money. Normally I would take my time and 'get round to it eventually' but after finding out how difficult they have made the process I'm going to get this done.

Has anyone had a similar experience or do you know of the correct method to cancel? (The 22189 number is apparently an endless cycle that leads nowhere)

  • English law permits the customer to cancel via reasonable methods, one of which would be to do that in writing by recorded delivery - regardless of whether the company is insisting there is only one approach they will accept, which is often phone so they can check security and that you are who you claim to be, but moreover so they can try to keep you or sell you something else.

Whether or not Spanish law is the same isn't something I can comment on, but if you know enough Spanish to be able to seek out the Spanish equivalent of "Consumer Direct" or whatever it's called there, you might gain some satisfaction.
