BT line rental Saver and Primus saver?

Just switched to the BT line rental saver and realised they have cancelled my Primus saver option service without me realising. I appreciate the poor reviews for primus but I have never had a problem, so can I set up Primus again not I have the line rental saver? Will I be able to use 18185? Thanks

    The bad news is that it is highly unlikely you will be able to set up Primus CPS now that it has been ceased (Primus/New Call Telecom no longer offer CPS packages to 'new' customers).

    OTOH, your non-BT calls package should not have been ceased according to another thread on here. https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/comment/46833487#Comment_46833487

    The good news is that, as you still have BT line rental, the 18185 prefix will still work.
    Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Heinz - I tried to send you this in a PM, as others have fallen in this trap and you could publicise it somewhere more public - but ... :(

    If you take up BT LSR via the on-line form, BT will cancel any pre-existing CPS arrangement by default.

    If you want to avoid that you must talk to BT by phone, and the best way I know to do that is to raise a query via email, in which case a UK-based support person will ring you back (at least that is my experience). If you just ring them you are likely to get a non-UK person who will not understand.

    Whatever you agree by phone, I recommend you insist they confirm it to you by email.

    Of course, if you want to retain Primus CPS you must never let BT remove it, else you will never get it back.

    Regards :)

    Thanks for the reply's.

    I had made the change online and service was due to be deacivated in a couple of days time. No repsonse to my email but I phoned Primus and suprisingly they said they would cancel the deactivation. So fingers crossed, we will see what will happen. I guess I will still need to use the override to make sure 2 calls through BT and avoid the £1.50 fee. Anyone know if BT are likely to attempt deactivating it again? Maybe I should call them too.
  • I started to order the Line Rental Saver online, but when it said they would cancel any other provider i decided to stop.

    So spoke to BT and that is when they confirmed that they would not cancel any existing provider. I mentioned that their website was misleading but they were not aware.

    Perhaps this is another marketing technique of clawing back customers by using their online ordering method.

    Thanks.

    A separate paragraph in my '6 steps' now links here.

    Spoke to BT, and they said it would be fine to stay with Primus for calls, they won't deactivate again. Just hoping Primus have stopped the deactivation as I have nothing in writing, despite a promise of email confirmation.

  • I wonder whether staying with Primus (New Call) on a CPS package is such a great benefit these days.

    It is easy enough to get BT to give the evenings and weekend calls package without charge. Furthermore, Primus charges have increased alarmingly in the past year. Twelve months ago the minimum call charge was 4p plus VAT. Now there is a call setup charge of 9p plus VAT (10.8p total). I used to place some paid-for calls through Primus because of the low minimum call charge, but that advantage has disappeared now.

    Unlike some who have posted here, I have no quibble with Primus from the service point of view. They have answered my (few) questions clearly and promptly – but then so have BT.

    Making non-inclusive calls via Primus is not recommended!

    BT line rental - use the 1280 prefix to send weekend 01/02/03/0845/0870 and weekday/weekday evening 0845 and weekday evening 0870 calls calls via BT (to 'qualify' for free Caller Display);

    Primus CPS - make 6pm to 8am weekday evening 01/02/03 calls;

    18185 - use the 18185 prefix for weekday daytime 01/02/03/0870 calls.

    Why not? The only paid-for calls I place through Primus are calls that would be more expensive on other routes.
