Carphone Warehouse being downright awkward in cancelling an O2 contract

I bought an L6 last February on a 12 month free contract from Carphone warehouse and it recently got to the time for me to cancel the cotract as it had a month to go.
I phoned up Carphone Warehouse who administer it for O2 and went through the usual charade of being put through to retentions. I explained I did not want to continue with the contract and the bloke there gave me a DNR number which he then said I needed to note and write in a letter and send off to a PO Box number which dealt with cancelations. I asked why I needed to cancel via phone and then write and he said that the purpose of the call was to provide a DNR number and the purpose of the letter was to inform them officially and without a letter quoting the code the contract wouldn;t be cancelled.
I asked for a fax number to be told one didn't exist. Anyway a week has passed and surprise surprise the Recorded Delivery letter according to trackand trace hasn't been signed for even though i was assured by CPW that they sign for all RD letters!!
I am now into the 12th month and as such feel that CPW are being awkward in trying to stop the cancellation within time.
Can anyone please let me know if there is an alternative menas to contact them and how they have in the past cancelled O2 contracts bought through CPW? Can I do it via a store perhaps? or is there an Email address?

Ask for a PAC code and move your number over to a pre-pay sim. By giving this to another provider, it automatically cancels your contract.
Even if your not going to use it, it will just cut itself off after about 6 months if you dont top up.
For example, Tesco are doing a Value sim for £1.73

If you quote port1 when you give them the code, they'll give you £5 credit.
Your coverage will be the same as now as Tesco use o2s network.
If you get another contract, even with CPW, you can just port the number again to your new connection. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
CPW arrrgggghhhhh - I had nothing but problems with them over my contract - needless to say I am now PAYG and would not touch them with a barge pole0
