I think you will find my comment was made somewhat tongue in cheek, however I could equally list a number of destinations that are very popular with tourists whose governments are morally bereft -or downright corrupt.
I did notice however the UK was conspicuous by its absence on your list.0 -
Cant really comment too much as ive never been, but I am in the stages of planning our trip there in a few weeks time.
We've only got 2 full days there so we're trying to cram as much as possible.
Fortunately we have saved up a bit so we're not doing on it strictly a shoestring.
The first day we've booked for afternoon tea at the Burj Al Arab, then heading to the Burj Khalifa for a trip to the observation deck of the worlds tallest building. Then a couple of drinks in the bars over looking the Dubai Fountains which look amazing. Before our afternoon tea we'll be trying to take in as much of the new Dubai as possible (aquarium in the mall) also a ride down & along Jumairah Beach.
The second day we're planning to visit the creek, the souks, maybe the Bastakiya before we do the Desert Safari around 4pm.
The hotels, waterparks & beaches down Jumeirah look fantastic, but we simply wont have the time to take it all in.
Anyway, thats my input (as I say, it wont count for much as ive not actually been) but will hopefully give you some ideas of things to do

Our flights were booked and we reckoned that if we didn't go it would be because of an insurable reason. So nothing lost. Great location - 5 mins walk from Tube stop - which runs v. efficiently.
Yes, that's a good hotel. Right in the centre of things (just opposite the Emirates Towers - treat yourself to a cocktail in the bar on the top floor at sunset. Expensive but worth it.) and there's a good range of bars and restaurants in the hotel complex itself. There are certainly more luxurious hotels in Dubai but this is a good compromise between price, location and comfort.0 -
Life around the Creek on the Deira side, just watching the dhows coming, going, loading and unloading.
Taking the abra, and just watching the world go by.
Walk under the Creek from Dubai to Deira, and you're straight into the souqs. Not the best in the Middle East, but still have atmosphere.
Apart from that and similar, it's negative marmite from me too.0 -
If you're looking for a luxurious treat, try Le Royal Meridien, We stayed there for 5 night several years ago. Service I can describe as 6 or 7 star. It had amazing reviews on Tripadviso back then. Not to be confused with Le Meridien. If you are staying on the other side of the creek, try the Hilton Creek. We stayed there last year for a couple of nights and get the executive service. They even pick you up from the airport in a nice chauffeur driven car!! And give the souqs a miss, they aren't that impressive.0
