Cheapest PC component stores

Hi Guys.. managed to kill my heard drive earlier and i'm in need of a new one.

i'm a bit broke right now and too many websites are selling external harddrives for much more then internal ide's

i want something around the 300gb and upwards mark i'm not sure where to look. tried ebuyer but i feel like there not the cheapest always.

any advice for websites to check? i want to keep the total cost under £60 including postage if thats possible (Aria have a nice one for £54.99 but the £8.50 postage kills it)

let me know if you have any tips please

Thanks alot. Amin

Just to state the absolute obvious (!) you are talking about a second hard drive you've killed? Because your PC needs at least one internal one.

Hi Amin. I see your from London. Have thought of going to a computer fair I use one in Stratford East London it cost £2.00 to get in but you can always get a bargain because there are so many traders under one roof. If you don't like the price start to walk a way and they normally will strike a deal with you. They don't like to see money walk away. :D
You can always get more with a kind word and a 2-by-4 than with just a kind word.

PC World isn't usually the cheapest but their PC component area isn't too bad price wise. I saw a Samsung 250GB for £50 in there, I realise that this is smaller than you want but they may do larger capacities too.

    Also try

https://www.scan.co.uk - their today only page is sometimes good

https://www.novatech.co.uk - I've used them in the past

For a really cheap option try subscribing to your local freecyle group. You may be able to get an old PC for nothing that you could rip the disk out of. it may not be as big as you need and being second hand it may not last as long but it may do for a while so you could save for something better.

  • thanks for the responses guys.

just to clear things up yes i want to replace the internal drive with a larger capacity one.

i've managed top seperate the pcb bit from the hard drive and i guessed i can simply buy the same brand drive (Hitachi deskstar) and temporarily swap the PCB's over just to get the data of my old drive.

    how plausable is this guys?

also would it be sneaky to swap the bad pcb onto a new drive and send it back stating it isnt working in the hope of a replacement? that way i can achive both my aims (superior capacity, and fixing my old drive)

which online store has a no quible garentee?

Why have you removed the PCB from the old drive?

I doubt very much if you can just swap the "pcb bit" over from the new drive to recover your data even if you buy the same brand of disk.

Also, yes it would be sneaky to try and defraud a company!

Sorry, Amin, you've confused me even more here. When you say you want to replace THE internal drive, you're implying that there's only one. You have to end up with at least one internal drive.

I have no idea really what you're trying to achieve by changing over PCBs and what not. If your drive works, then your drive works and that's that. There are specialist companies which can possibly recover data from the drive, but unless you run a multi-million pound enterprise, it's not worth the cost.

And finally, let's be 100% clear here - it is illegal to attempt to defraud a company in the way you're discussing here. (Not that I understand exactly what you're trying to do)
