iPad 2 now, or wait for iPad 3?

the laptop I'm currently using runs 1366 * 768 on a 15" widescreen. iPad will run 1024 * 768 (equivalent non-widescreen resolution) but on a 9.7" display. That's an increase of over 30% in resolution compared to overall size. Considering I'm more than happy with the resolution of my PC, and always have been with 1024 * 768 I can't see this being an issue. Gonna head over to Stormfront tomorrow and just check out the actual display using apps that I'm already used to on my iPhone 4, see if I really notice a resolution difference.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0

Your fingers won't magically become smaller, enabling a better use of a higher resolution.
The ipad 2 is pretty damn good. I think the best improvements will come with the next OS release. I'm also an android user, so get fustrated by the terrible apple iOS keyboard. I've got a nuance 'swype-style' keyboard on my phone, which lets me type far quicker than on the ipad.
I do struggle to look at the ipad and see anything that needs a significant upgrade. I guess a better front and back camera would be good. The speaker isn't great.. but it's not a hifi so i don't care really. I guess the next step will be a beefier graphics and processor. However, it'd be nice to add some kind of controller, since there are limits of what can be done with a touchscreen and games.
I think you may also see some form of presure sensitive touch-screen technology eventually. This might need a stylus though. Maybe some form of haptic feedback also. Any 'big' changes are going to be pretty revolutionary if they are going to make the next ipads stand out0 -

Pretty much what I was thinking... wondered if anyone else had a different outlook.
For what it is I can't see that better gfx/resolution will be at all beneficial or make much difference. I have a 5M camera on my iPhone 4 already. And especially for me its never going to replace my Laptop, and I'll never have a mac of any description so I can't see anything else I'd want from it. Unless they bring one out for me to play proper full PC games on (say Diabolo 2, 3 when its released, WoW, C&C, Portal)... and there's no chance of that.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
I'm in a simlar postion, I think the wait for 3 is too long imo so I will most likely get a 2 within 3 months. From what I reckon the 2 to 3 won't be as big a gap as between 1 to 2 but really who knows.
You could wait forever with Apple though so if you want one and it's still in ruour mill then you could wait a while.0 -
I use my eyes to see, not my fingers... On my iPad 2, I can clearly see the individual pixels, and in my opinion, if there were more, smaller pixels, (like on an iPhone 4), it would look significantly nicer.ringo_24601 wrote: »Your fingers won't magically become smaller, enabling a better use of a higher resolution.
I don't mean I would prefer a higher resolution so that everything on the screen could be made smaller therefore more stuff would fit on it, I mean I would prefer a higher resolution so that everything could be more detailed and 'less pixelated' (if that makes sense).
A higher resolution wouldn't serve much if any practical purpose I agree. But I would still consider it to be an improvement because it would look better, IMO.0 -

Agree it'd look a bit nicer; but 6 months for the sake of a marginally better look, with little or no improvement in performance or features; and possibly a price hike to boot isn't really worth it.Never argue with stupid people, they will drag you down to their level and then beat you with experience.- Mark TwainArguing with idiots is like playing chess with a pigeon: no matter how good you are at chess, its just going to knock over the pieces and strut around like its victorious.0 -
Get a cheapo iPad 1 refurb from the Apple store with 1 year's warranty ... mint condition mine was.0

Im not a fan of Apple personally, so I would be inclined to look for a decent discount as the next model is about to be released.
Or do what one of my mates does and buy every I-Phone I-Pad I-everything on the day they are released LOL
I wonder if his house is the only Apple Museum or are there 100s out there?0 -
The problem is that all of this is speculation.... as we also had speculation about the original iPad and iPad 2 before they were launched. Some turned out to be true others didn't.Agree it'd look a bit nicer; but 6 months for the sake of a marginally better look, with little or no improvement in performance or features; and possibly a price hike to boot isn't really worth it.
One of the challenges of being an Apple fan is the fact there is only one manufacturer of their hardware (themselves) and they run on an 9-18 month release cycle.
If your a Windows fan then there is actually probably a new computer launched every day, if not more frequent, so they all just disappear into the background. A new Apple product is a major media event!
Having compared the iPhone 3gs and 4 with their screen resolutions I think that the higher density resolution is worth having and I am sure with the iPad it will be similar. I very much doubt that will be the only change as with the iPhone they also changed the processor, ram, added second mic, added second camera, improved camera etc etc.0 -

I definitely want a 2 or higher.
Already looked for a refurbed model; none currently on the site.dealer_wins wrote: »Im not a fan of Apple personally, so I would be inclined to look for a decent discount as the next model is about to be released.

I have no interest in any of their products other than the iPad and iPhone. Don't want a Mac, or Apple TV, or a MacBook, or iPod. The two fit rather well within the computer setup I run and the way I like everything to work and fit together; without having to run everything on iOS, Mac OS or constantly have iTunes on.InsideInsurance wrote: »The problem is that all of this is speculation.... as we also had speculation about the original iPad and iPad 2 before they were launched. The more they want to fit in, the longer the wait will be, meaning its even more of an incentive for me to buy now. The new chips won't be ready 'till close to March, retina displays are unlikely to be on the go this year... and improved cameras are pretty much irrelevant to me as I just use the iPhone 4 for my pics. I can't think of, and haven't heard any rumours of anything that might be in it that'd justify me waiting 6 months; but I wanted peoples opinions on what might be coming; rumours and all.
The main changes that could persuade me to wait, are things that Jobs is never going to include; Java (for video at least), SD card memory expansion, USB flash drive port (or thunderbolt, which has been rumoured, but I'm not convinced), or support for the types of PC games I enjoy playing. Jobs will never include them, so it'll take something quite spectacular to get me on board with a 6+ month wait.
