RAC Insurance

I went online today and found a very competitive quote for £198.16 from RAC Insurance. I also had the piece of mind of dealing with a very reputable company( I thought!) which made the offer even more appealing. Unfortunately it was not a pleasant experience. After accepting the offer and making payment from my debit card I printed off the documents. To my astonishment the amount paid was £291.50. A difference of £93. 34. I had not asked for any extras such as legal assistance, and therefore I was at a loss as to how something can jump up that amount? Had I not checked my details carefully I would have been oblivious to what had occurred. I phoned the relevant number and after being on hold (more infuriating) I spoke to one of their representatives. I explained the situation and found her attitude particularly unhelpful. I could see the amount on my screen( £198.16) but the representative simply informed that the amount was £291.50. I was then informed that I should photocopy documents and send them to RAC. This error was not of my making, but I have to do all the collating and sending? The representative did not try and give me a breakdown of how this might have occurred. Perhaps there was a 'tick' in the wrong box? Perhaps the mistake was on my part? I accept that mistakes happen but no help or solution was forthcoming. I cancelled the policy on the spot but I was not given a reference number or caller details to aid me in further communications. A letter has been fired off to the MD but I urge everyone, if they are taking out insurance with the RAC, to check their policy as these con men could hike up the price!.

You shouldn't be able to approve any charge until a final total is shown on your screen. If the quote was 198 and they added extras, the final price would have been shown as you submitted the order surely?
That's the time to spot it.
Was that what you had on your screen or just the quote?
5t.What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?0 -
You're not alone in this.
Have a look at a similar thread on the insurance board.
Something very dodgy going on here.0 -

Sorry to hear you have suffered a similar experience.
Their Customer Services do not seem to be very helpful. When I told them the situation, I was told that because the policy was taken out through the website rather than over the phone, they do not have a record of what I should have paid, so there is nothing they can do.
And because it is over 14 days since the policy was taken out (my mother has only just received her Credit Card statement, so it has only just come to light), if we were to cancel the policy, there will be a £35.00 Cancellation charge.
Surely this cannot be right. When I clicked on the 'Pay Now' screen, the price on the screen was £242.17. Since then, we have received no confirmation from RAC the price we paid. When my Mother received her CC statement showing £290.17 had been charged, she was quite distressed about it.
Maybe I should have taken a Screen Grab of the payment page, but I assumes I would receive either email confirmation or something of the price paid.
I would have thought that RAC was a reputable company, but it seems I was mistaken.
Im not sure what else I can do now, but I just hope this serves as a warning to others.0 -
I got a quote from the RAC a couple of days ago with a view to getting £80 cashback on the policy. They emailed me the quote details showing the price.
Did they not do the same for you?0 -
No, did not get quote, purchased it straight away. I did receive an email with confirmation of purchase of policy, but there is no mention of the cost on this confirmation.0

What happens if you get another quote from them with the same details (perhaps use a different email address.) If it was only a couple of days ago the quote should be similar. It might give you a clue as to what was added.0

Exactly what happened to me mate. When I clicked on the'Pay Now' screen it was £198.16. When I printed off the documents it was £291.50. I got the same guff that you got from the very unhelpful person on the other end of the phone. I cancelled on the spot but I have received no email to say that it is cancelled?0 -
Had the same problem.
Quoted around £500, double checked before making payment and confirming and then when payment confirmed said will send documents in post. Got documents in post and the price had jumped to £660.
Rang them up, told them the problem, they assumed I had made a mistake which I haven't. Told them to cancel it. They then rechecked and found my quote for £500.
Def something dodgy going on. I did do it via cashback and that tracked at the £660 amount. Maybe a way of getting out of paying the cashback of £80?0
