Haven't been able to own a car due to bankruptcy for the last 2 years "as i didn't require one", now arthritis kicks in and having to pick up and drop off my little boy every weekend i require a car...

My moan is car insurance is soo bloody high!!! Little old diesel pug basic as you like and quotes in excess of £470!! 4 times more than the car is worth!!

Insurance is a cut throat business and the no middleman insurance company's with the well known actor or noddin dog are stupidly high??

With a very tight budget with my bankruptcy payments going on till 2013 i am stuck

Have you put in the maximum excess on fully comp.
Ours is about £1000 voluntary on a £450 car.

There is such a thing as pricing yourselves out of the market and Car insurance brokers are sailing very close to the wind.
The alternatives such as co-operated underwriting are starting to look like a good option .
Car insurance is Not compulsory despite what we are preached, to have your losses underwritten for purposes of the road traffic act is.

Got more info on that, since Googling it just returns the Co-Op's insurance policies.

I know about the thing where you can post a bond rather than have insurance, but what you mention sounds like it may be something more attainable to normal people.

That really is re-inventing the wheel, and going back to how insurance began.
    I wouldn't mind.

I'd just like to point out the value of the op's own car will have little or nothing to do with the insurance price.

The risk to everyone/thing else is the same regardless of if the car being insured is a £200 15 year old one, or a £20k new version of the same car.
It's the other factors like location, no "no claims" bonus, driver age and job etc. that will determine the cost of insurance the most for many people.

i beg to differ on that one. insurance companies often ask online the value of the car ( if you read the small print) and must be a minimum £1000 value, not all but most do this, DL wouldnt allow me to put £995 kept returning the quote page with red writing next to vehicle value, must be a minimum of £1000.

the cost of the car matters more than you may think.
