41 yr old Class 2 qualified safe driver no convictions no accidents.....

Haven't been able to own a car due to bankruptcy for the last 2 years "as i didn't require one", now arthritis kicks in and having to pick up and drop off my little boy every weekend i require a car...

My moan is car insurance is soo bloody high!!! Little old diesel pug basic as you like and quotes in excess of £470!! 4 times more than the car is worth!!

Insurance is a cut throat business and the no middleman insurance company's with the well known actor or noddin dog are stupidly high??

With a very tight budget with my bankruptcy payments going on till 2013 i am stuck

Have a look at Admiral, Bell and Elephant. All the same company, but seem to be the best for a lot of people at the moment.

The value of your car doesn't really matter. You can do thousands of pounds of damage to another car in a car worth £250 or £250,000.
What is pi? Where did it come from?
  • hmmm, we've found insurance prices to be a bit mental. We are goig to need a 2nd car when I start working and looking at little 'run-arounds' but the insurance is so high on them. The crazy thing is we had a focus st, a few months old and were paying £600 a year, then DH was made redundant and we had to sell her :( and ended up with a 10 yr old diesel mondeo. Insurance was nearly £800 and not only were we driving an older, slower car we had also both turned 30. Now ok maybe the mondeo would be easier to nick but the focus would have been dearer to replsce and repair and I know which one I was more likely to wrap round a tree.

Also, have you ever found insurance that will take your driving experience into account? You can get a discount if you've taken the pass plus course but if you've been driving a lorry accident free for many years that doesn't count fpr anything (DH is also a class 2 driver).

    Gotta be a 205, 106 or 306 I would think?

All of the above are in higher risk categories (insurance group means nothing), partly down to age and affordability making them popular with the boyracer crowd.

I agree with this; my wife's Hyundai i 10 costs £159 a year to insure fully comp!

£470 doesn't seem that bad these days for someone who will have zero no claims bonus.

I'm paying a little under twice that with 5 years NCB.

It doesn't make a lot of sense.
I insure 3 cars for just over that much.
(One is the same car, £140 with Axa Direct)

How much NCB do you have?

Full, (whatever they class it as each year, between 5 and 11 years depending on the company) on all of them.

My daughters got none though, age 18, about £600 fully comp on hers as well.

Full NCB is usually between 60% and 75% discount

so based on your quote for that car, that would be between £350 and £560 if you had zero NCB, depending on what your full NCB actually gets you. The OPs figure is right in the middle of that.

I have no idea whether Somerset is considered to be a particularly risky area or not.

It's probably down to the area you live in. Here's a good example.

I'm 30 and run a 56 plate A4 2.0TFSI quattro Sline Special Edition Avant and pay just over £400 and live in York. It's £1500 if I lived back at my parents in Bradford.
