    Perhaps the canvas size is bigger than the image size so you get a border.

    so my original pictures are too small say ,,avatar size
    and when i put them to the site it adds the boarder to bring the file to say email size

    so how do i correct that either in the photos i have or in the future
    (these particular photos i have no control over)

    If you are only seeing a border when you upload the images to your site then it could be your style sheet that's adding it.

    Try looking through your style sheet for something like
    img {
       border:10px solid #FFFFFF;
    }
    

    If you want, you can post or PM the url of your site and I'll take a look.
  • Gimp is free and can do nearly everything photoshop can
