    What's 54cm a measurement of?

    I hope it's not a 21+ inch frame?

What are you like 7ft tall?

In all seriousness 54cm is the basic recommended size for anyone around 6ft tall, but it's a VERY rough guide and doesn't account for other physical factors.

54cm should be from top tube centre to bottom tube centre down the seat tube- ie from the pedals to near the seat along that tube.

For me it isn't around 6ft at all. I bought a road bike last year and 54cm is for people 5'6" to 5'8" as a lot of charts state. Whilst no substitute for trying them, I'd never fit on a 54cm it felt so tiny and I am 5'11"/6ft, hence my bike is a 58cm.

The thing is, the most important measurement is really the top tube length. But this is rarely taken into consideration.

I joined the cycle to work scheme and ordered a Carrera TDF bike from Halfords website in a size 58cm. It was down to £300 from £450. The customer service was abysmal and I took the bike home, after handing my voucher over, without any help setting it up. When I got home I found out it was a 54 cm and way to small I returned it and was told they don't do a 58cm. The next closest model is a Boardman race comp for £650. Clearly the bike was mis advertised and misold. But I can't put money to the C2W voucher. What options do I have any advice? BTW they still have the 58cm advertised!!

    Hi,

you are protected under the Sell of Goods act.
If the item is not as described you have the right to reject and ask either for a refund or have a substitution.
It's not your fault or theirs. if the description is misleading you've full rights.

try to sort out the issue with the local branch or call the call centre as they might have more power to enforce it.

If you bought it via debit or credit card check they do the chargeback scheme and go for it. they're liable as the seller to make sure the item is sold as described, fit for purpose and of reliable quality.

In any case, for more help call consumer direct - look for the alternative numbers on the direct.gov.uk website for a cheaper no than 0845.

    I hope that helps!

The size could be misleading. IFAIK the TDF has a compact geometry frame so a 54cm frame will have a relatively long top tube that would be equivalent to a larger conventional frame. It might just be a case of raising the saddle a bit - compact geometry frames do usually have a lot of seat post showing.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Large is described as 54cm.
  • Don't forget other important measurements - stem length for example - can make a huge difference.

How tall are you? I'm 5'10" and ride a 54cm road bike. There are plenty of ways in which a 54 can be made to ride like a 56 or 58.

Don't go with what the charts say - leg length, body length and overall height affect the size of bike that will fit best. Saddle height, stem length and saddle forward/backward position will also affect the fit and can be changed easily.
    It's only numbers.

Technically incorrect, the op purchased the bike from his employer and does not in fact have a contract with Halfords, the employer does as a B2B purchase. Very grey as far consumer legislation is concerned ;)

The TDF large is described as 58cm, M is 54cm. The Virtuoso and Vanquish large is 54cm, M is 51cm :o Some bikes now have an extended seat tube and the manufacturers spec measures from the top of that. The correct size bike for you is the one that fits, the size on the label is only a very rough guide at best.
