I used to repair PC's in my spare time for the last 13 years, I wrote for less, I put the largest item first.

The washers exist for a reason, they are an additional level of protection for avoiding possible shorts and also screw cap damage to the tracks on a motherboard. By not using this method you are reducing the amount of protection you give to the motherboard shorting or damage being caused.

They are not superfluous, they serve a purpose and just because a google search doesn't mention them does not mean they arent useful.

I used to review cases for PC's as part of my technical writing days and I didn't mention if washers were included, does that make them superfluous, no, it just means in the grand scheme of talking about a case and its design its a minor, but none the less valid component to include, just not one I needed to mention in each article.

And the only thing superfluous around here is your opinion, as its frequently wrong.

Floppy disks exist and I have stopped using those too. Suppose I'm wrong there as well.

Amidst all the tech-flak, might I just drag this topic back on course with a not very optimistic update:
Aldi phoned me today having conferred with Medion and proceeded to regurgitate the Medion mantra. I explained that Medion is no longer my target and that my statutory recourse via the Sale of Goods Act 1979 is through Aldi.
Aldi will respond to this tomorrow. Thank you and sorry to interrupt.

*sigh* floppy disk is removable media. washers come in the accessory pack with a case, to be used in a case.

    nevermind eh?

Actually fibre washers only come with a few brands of case, these are supplied for the small Luddite market.

I have a result. After one or two attempts to get me to allow Medion to have another go at it, Aldi have agreed a partial refund.
I paid £479.99 on 25/3/2010 and Aldi will send me a cheque for £360 when I return the PC to their store, which I will do in the next hour or so. I think this is a satisfactory outcome which has been achieved with advice from MSE and Consumer Direct and also an entirely reasonable attitude from Aldi. This of course means I may not be online for a while until I get my back-up older machine working.:j:beer::T

So let's get this straight, the screen turns off when you plug the HDMI in and comes back on when you remove it or am I reading this wrong? Does the PC continue to run during this time?

If it does, and your sending it back, I'd backup any data then wipe any personal info off it.

Yes, you are correct. I still had power to the PC and monitor but with a blank screen. The only answer that I knew of was to omit the HDMI. Bear in mind too that HDMI, which was ok up until July, was just the most recent problem of several.
Latterly, as well, Explorer kept stopping and restarting. I'm not saying there is a direct link between these occurences but, to me, it seemed symptomatic of a general deterioration of the internal workings of the PC.
