I got three month's including the movies over Xmas for £18.50! The guy I spoke to said "You've had 8 deals in the last year!" So I just said "Well can I have another one?" and he let me. Got to ring up today and cancel it tho!

My 6 Months half price deal ended just before Christmas. I called to cancel (didn't ask for a deal) and they offered me all the "mix" channels for £15 (instead of £21) but I still asked to cancel. They called me back a few days ago (I get cut off tomorrow) asking why I was cancelling - I mentioned that it was not value for money and Freeview was a better option to me. He didn't offer me any deals but did try a persuasion job on how "great" $ky is (yeah right!).

I'm happy enough with just Freeview - but will probably resubscribe when they next offer me half-price for x-months or equivalent (if only for their Rugby League coverage).

Good man, sky has got to be good for something  ..... add to that this years Eurosport coverage :T
  • I re subscribed in the summer and got 3 months of sky sports for a £1! Then I rang in the Autumm and they offered me another deal 5 months half price. No luck this month as they said they couldnt offer me anything at the moment so my sky goes off this Friday.
  • Ring and cancel, and see if they offer you a deal.DO NOT ask for a deal to make you stay as THEY WILL see through this.
Do not worry if they do go through with the cancellation ,as they will ring you before the 30 days and ask you to reconsider and offer you plenty of incentive.....TRUST ME !!!

I disagree, I too have had much success with half price for 6 months etc... but when offer ran out in August, I decided to downgrade. Thinking I'd quite like Sky Movies etc.. through the winter, I called to cancel and they said the normal but this time there was no call before the 30 days and I'm now 2 weeks without Sky, saving some money and (as yet) not really missing it. If you're prepared to live without Sky I'd say it's worth trying but certainly NOT guaranteed, TRUST ME!!! I have also heard that it is a policy they are moving away from (deals to customers threatening to cancel). Perhaps when more companies offer on demand TV we'll have a better chance at prices coming down without offers...here's hoping.

I would also say that its well worth a try giving up on sky. Almost exactly a year ago I cancelled my subscription, they offered me several months half price but I refused because I had 'made up my mind'. I think most of all I started resenting the time I was wasting on tv and also the content seemed to be getting progressively worse (probably I'm just getting older!). Anyway a month later I turned off the box as well so I was only receiving the 5 'normal' channels. A couple of weeks after that I turned the tv off completely. About two months after that I removed the tv from my living room.

The past year has probably been the most interesting and productive year of my adult life. Giving up tv was definitely the springboard for this. Many friends expressed incredulity at the idea (I watched A LOT of tv before switching off) and one even reduced his visits to my house! But as time has passed everyone's accepted it and many express a desire to do the same.

Just recently I had a friend staying at my house who was here on holiday from another country. In their honour I decided to dust off the telly to give them a fuller flavour of British culture. I was sorry when they left (yesterday) but took great delight in returning my telly to its box in the cupboard. Next week I'm going to give it to a friend who's tv is on the blink, thus insuring I can't make the same mistake again.

It could be argued that my post has no place in a thread about reducing the costs of a sky subscription, but then again on top of the obvious other benefits, I've reduced the cost of mine from £500 per year to 0. Also once I get rid of my telly next week I won't have to renew my tv licence saving more money. (just imagine the joy I'll feel when the tv licence enforcing officer turns up at my door!)
I appreciate that giving up sky or tv completely is not for everyone but its been a hugely positive experience for me and I would encourage others considering it to take the plunge. After all, we're not born into this world 'needing' tv. Good luck.
  • I can't say how impressed I am and I only wish I had the fortitude to do the same.

  • I phoned up to "cancel" the other day, citing thefact I wanted NTL, cos of their On Demand feature, and that I wasn't prepared to pay £150+ for Sky plus.
After talking to about 4 different people I eventually got offered a Sky+ box for £49, with installation, and no extra monthly fee.
  • If you are looking at reductions (and I did this, this morning for a freind) best thing to do is call a company called Freesat http://www.freesatfromsky.co.uk/ They are a Sky owned company but work buy buying bulk memberships from the mother company. Where as Sky will offer 3 months half price, Freesat offered me 12 months half price (which i then negotiated to 18 months).

    Their 2 current deals that you can just call and order are;

12 months 1/3 off whatever package you want.

1/2 price for 6 months, then full price for the remainder of contract.

Both of these include installation and standard equipment. I think if you do the math that 12 months for 1/3 off is the cheaper.

Earlier today we ordered the top package - the sports (usually £37) for £24.67 a month for 12 months. There is then nothing on top of this.

I managed to get 12 months half price but they wont do that deal anymore apparently. I pay £21 for the £44 sky world package..

If you want free Sky Plus, just ask for it. You have to supply the box and the installation but Sky will just turn it oin for free as long as you are on any package over £30. I picked up a box for £20 a twin LNB for £4 and cable for £8. Very easy to do...
