Santander security

Received a letter today from santander saying "Thank you for signing up to our telephone banking service", but I hadn't applied.
Won't go through the usual contact problems with this bunch, suffice to say it took 6 calls to Customer service (joke) and branch (bigger joke) get someone to actually do something.
The question I have relates to the number of security questions I was asked by the last advisor - I began to feel a bit uneasy about the amount of information I was giving her.
1) account number, and sort code
2) card number
3) card expiry date
4) three digit security number on back of card
5) amount of overdraft limit
6) joint or single account
7) wife's full name
8) name and amount for a direct debit
Is this usual?

  • I've had one of those.
Got the ID and later the PIN in the usual sealed tear off strip type of letter.

I'd assumed it was because I'd applied for a Esaver 4 account and this was the first non A&L account I'd had with santander - though I did have an old Abbey account with them.

I don't have/have never had any current accounts with them only savings type.

I bank with Santander and never been asked all them questions. They normally ask me first my password on the account. The only other information is name account holder , name and amount for a transaction recently taken out of my account and my birthday., maybe overdraft limit and account number. They have never asked for card number , digits on the back. I would be duvious about all those questions did you ring Santander on 08459 724 724
  • Yes, used the standard Customer Service number (I've just checked the phone that I did dial 08459 724 724).
I recently opened a new e-saver, so that might be the reason, but the Santander staff are so unprofessional they do not fill me with any confidence.

I have a current account had it over 30 years with Abbey. I must admit they have gone downhill somewhat since Santander have taken over. I have an overdraft which i got when with Abbey incase i go pence over into the overdraft. Used to be about 2p charge with Abbey now 50p a day with Santander cant believe that. Overdraw 1p for 4 days and get charged £2.

I phoned them again to verify that the security questions were indeed normal. Did reasonably well - only three calls to get through this time.
Having explained my concerns, I was asked what was the number I called, and the advisor dialed it to confirm that it was Santander.
Then we went through another set of security questions in order to confirm that my original issue had been recorded by Santander.
I think I will have to move banks as my Santander paranoia is getting worse.

Another point. When you get through they now specifically say where they are based. I got Liverpool, Leicester, and Bootle.

why didn't you use the telephone banking number? then you wouldn't have had to answer any questions

I went through telephone banking, verified myself using all the numbers I'd set up (passcode / tel banking number etc) and I was still asked the same questions as the OP.

Yes this is normal, although i would hardly call your acc no and sort code security questions .

To you they are 8 questions but really they are only asking you 4. For example, expiry date and 3 digit code on the back is used together as when you buy something online. the last 4 digits of your card number will have been just to select your card from all the cards you currently/previously have had rather than a security question.

I got this after applying for esaver, even though I didn't apply for the telephone banking (perhaps there was a small print I missed). I ignored it as well as the calls from a premium phone number claiming to be Santander, and no problems for the past month.
