Painter/Decorator Quote

Any idea how many days it would take to paint, say, a bedroom, hall/stairs, two small bathrooms?

Also, whats going daily rate for painter?

  • We had a small bedroom decorated (painting and wallpaper) it took 4 days, or rather 4 half days and cost £260. I think the daily rate is around £125. Hope this helps.

Depends on a whole host of things:

Size of rooms. (your 'small' is someones elses Albert Hall)
Amount of preparation. Does wood need to be sanded back/burnt off and reprimed etc. Are the walls cracking.
What is currently on the walls? If its paper, this needs to come off, it then has to be sugar soaped, sanded, filled etc.
    Are the bathrooms mainly tiled?
Amount of gloss work. Deep skirtings take longer and the hallway stairs and landing can take ages if you have spindles and many doors coming off. A typical hall and landing can easily have 10+ doors coming off plus spindles. In that alone you have 3 - 4 days. If you have dado rails and picture rails, allow even longer.

However, all things being equal, we typically allow 2 days per room for a minimal preration redecoration on an average 12' x 12' The small bathrooms could probably be done in 2 days total. Allow up to a week for the hallway, stairs and landing.

Get fixed prices for the work. Don't agree to get it done on day work as the work can easily be dragged out by less scrupulous decorators.

A decorator would expect to earn £100 - £150 per day depebding on where in the country.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.

that's 4 half days - if you allow 60 quid for paint then that's 100 per day , which is still a good deal

What decorators have you been using, your timescale seems incredibly slow to me. 10 days to paint a hallway, stairs and landing?! 2 working weeks?!

    No way.

At £40 a day youre robbing them,

They cant be professionals at that rate.

Lets hope your happy with the standard otherwise you'll be paying again.

Decorators around here are about £15 an hour.
make the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.

Don't be a muppet all your life.

I was looking at a worst case scenario as the OP had given absolutely zero information to go on.

It is not uncommon to find a house with 10 or more doors coming off the hall and landing. If the GF doors are 15 pane glazed SA doors, plus spindles and balustrades going up the stairs and a galleried landing, plus dado and picture rails, then its very easy to spend 5 or more days on gloss work - 2 coats of oil based undercoat plus gloss.

    So stop being a retard.

  • yeah, £40 a day is good ! Have you seen their work ? You may be lucky and they do a decent job, I hope so. We usually struggle to get people to come and look at any job we need doing. Maybe they're too busy, maybe the job's too small I don't know. We decorated one bedroom ourselves recently and it actually looks pretty good, almost professional ! Let us know how it looks when it's finished.

What an idiot, I think people can judge for themselves what kind of person you are without me resorting to childish insults as you have.

Straight onto the offensive because you appear to be an incredibly slow painter or has employed the services of one.

Funny how you described unscrupulous decorators dragging out jobs, but say it would take a professional decorator two days to paint two small bathrooms, 2 days for the bedroom, 10 days for the hall, stairs, landing, so 14 days 3 working weeks, for a job which sounds like a standard house and would be done in less than a week easy.

I base my experience on having actually worked as a painter and my father having a painting and decorating company, for 20 odd years. He would just laugh at some of your timings.
