Council Tax and Jacobs Bailiffs Charges

Options
Hi All,

Please can anyone help or advise.

I was late paying my CT, it went to court and Jacobs bailiffs were instructed. I got a letter from them with the total amount owed plus their fees.

I did pay all the CT in one go direct to the Council, and was advised there was still £42 of costs to pay directly to Jacobs.

I had a letter from them to this effect. I tried to contact the bailiff directly but mobile was off or went to VM

Next thing I have had a letter through with a levy on a car I know nothing about, and advising I now owe £202.

I really cant understand this so I called the bailiff who advised me this is charges but when I questioned him about the car he went all 'wooly', did not recall this and generally sounded very vague, just kept mentioning these are the charges to pay.

Is this right? I have never seen anyone or spoken to anyone but this seems like legalised robbery or is it legal?

Council are unable to help

Can anyone here advise please?

Thanks

Out of my area I'm afraid and I think you need some specialist advice. Check the link out below.

Also check out the link below about fees. As far as I can tell, the bailiffs can charge fees but they must provide a breakdown of these in writing. I'd probably write to them, offering them the £42 (if you're confident this is reasonable) and see what happens.

But the bailiffs are contracted by them, surely they should know.

Bailiffs cannot charge collection fees on outstanding fees, which is what is sounds like they have done. There are documented fee schedules for 1st and 2nd visits and Levy fees but anything else will be them trying it on.

As you have now paid your CT in full I would not be to bothered, the case will have been taken back from the Bailiff by the council.

I would ignore them and if you are contacted by them tell them to speak to their "client" as you have nothing to discuss with them as the account has been paid in full.

Alternatively you could tell them to go f**k themselves.

WRONG 100% the bailiffs are appointed by the courts and not by the local authority

Thanks to all for your replies so far.
Is it right then that they cant charge collection fees on outstanding fees? - If this is the case then absolutely then can swing for it

But they can charge fees. And I assume the £42 was legitimate (although perhaps not). But if it was, I assume you've got to pay it, and your post suggests you've not paid them anything.

I think you need to find out whether the original fee was legitimate. And pay it if it was.

The liability order was for £958 paid in full to the council on 11th July. They advised me at that time there were £42 bailiffs costs to pay. The notice of seizure was dated 24th August and I have no idea whos car it is!!

    Thanks so far

Someone else's car that happened to be parked outside your property when the Bailiffs drove past? :rotfl:

Probably - but that just makes a mockery of the fact that they want to charge me to do this.

I just want to know where I stand yes they have charges but I only want them to be fair and legal
