I seem to remember a big youth hostel at Ambleside? Though youth hostels association now take all ages/families etc. It was a big place right next to the lake.

Yes, just found some reviews - sounds lovely Looks like about £46 a night for a double room in September?

The OP will miss it! It's actually called The Old England!

(The Swan (quite nice, but not big or particularly flashy) is actually in Grasmere)

We stayed in the Old England - oh its lovely, full of antique furniture, views right on to the lake from our room and from the dining room and bar. Well worth the bit extra :)

If it looks OK on the photos with good reviews it's probably not too much. The Lake District is very touristy so it sounds OK. I know of B&Bs in Whitby that charge £25-£35 a night and they're nothing special!

You make it sound like Blackpool!!

Parts of it are but there are plenty of stunning places without all all the tatt shops and where you can walk for miles without seeing a soul.

I guess it depends what you want, touristy areas like Kewsick and Windemere attract people for a reason because they are lovely, I prefer both in Winter when there are a lot less people around.

Personally give me Wasdale or Ennerdale any day of the week amazing views, not a grockle in sight - total bliss.

  • I've stayed at the Belsfied Hotel in Bowness twice.

Very agreeable, and not dear provided they offer you a discounted rate.

In common with many chain hotels, the published tariff is high, but most people stay for a lot less.
