Hi all,
Was thinking of going away on 11th and 12th Sep, Never been to Lake
District before so was wondering if any recommendation for a cheap
place to stay for 2 nights.
Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheap - Premier Inn or Travel Lodge in Kendal - the kendal torchlight is on on friday and could be very busy though. its a good night
otherwise my wife has stayed at smallwood house in Ambleside a couple of times and its very nice
if you want to save money on some attractions there is a new scheme called the lake district pass.
not sure on how many good cheap hotels there are but lots of good hotels. at this stage maybe worth waiting and phone a few on friday see what offers are onThe futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
Ambleside is a really nice little place. Lots of shops including outdoorsy ones and plenty of eating/drinking places. Bowness on Windermere is also really nice with lots of walks and being right by the lake is really nice if you fancy going on one of the boats. We actually walked from Bowness upto Windermere at the top of the hill as well, as the distances aren't that great which was nice.0

Hi
The parent live very close to the Lakes (lucky beggers!) and have friends that stay here quite often http://www.whitelodgehotel.com/index.htm. I haven't been myself but they keep going back and they rave about the breakies (and they are quite posh)
They also quite often have offer on laterooms.com if you stay two nights.
Its in a good location - there is soooooooo much to do in that area, just pack a rain coat, you really do get four seasons in one day in The Lakes (as I found out getting soaked wandering around Ennerdale this wkd!) oh and comfy shoes, very very comfy shoes.
Have fun
YDSMI wish I would take my own advice!0 -
I'm not sure how well you know the lakes so I'll assume not at all.
I'd go with Bowness on windermere or Ambleside if you dont want complete isolation. These 2 places are my favourite as there is a fair selection of bars and restaurants and right in the center of the lakes.
Cottages tend to only cater for longer terms than 2 days so you may have to go with a hotel.
The biggest, flashest looking hotel I'm aware of is the Macdonald Swan hotel at bowness. You cannot miss it as you drive through bowness.
If you want isolation then there is Hawkshead, Grasmere, Newby Bridge etc..
Kendal and Keswick are similar, busy places but on the outskirts of the lakes. These appeal less to me.0 -

The OP will miss it! It's actually called The Old England!
(The Swan (quite nice, but not big or particularly flashy) is actually in Grasmere)0 -

they are both right in the middle of bowness and only 1 min from the lake and the shops are all on your door step0 -

i'm intriqued as to what you classs as isolation as Hawkshead & Grasmere both have a quite a selection of hotels, restaurants and pubs. Newby Bridge is pretty much that. but then you suggest the swan is in bowness and a grand hotel (not sure i'd class the old england as grand either, but hey ho - it is the biggest hotel in Bowness, with the Belsfield a close 2nd i believe.
I would think the people of keswick would get very upset at being classed on the outskirts of the lakes.
So i'm not sure you know the lakes either. The futures bright the future is Ginger0 -
Thank you all for your replies. I found a double room for £70 for two of us per night including breakfast. Is that good price?0

Its been yrs since DH & I had a stay up there but we stayed here http://www.chestnuts-hotel.co.uk/index.htm & it was delightful! Really pretty & quiet & just up the road from a lovely pub called The Brookside (not cos of the soap but there really was a brook nearby!!!)
Looking by the photos it still seems lovely. Situated by the clock in Bowness. I'd definately go back
