I have just insured my daughter for a Group 2 Fiat Panda 04 (new shape) with KwikFit for £790 (+ £30 legal cover) The next cheapest found was Tesco at around £990. The insurance is in her name and she is only on a provisional licence her 17th Birthday was 5th January 2007.

It actually gets more expensive when she passes her test than as someone with a provisional licence.

Everyone should remember however that the main driver must be declared - by default it will be the policyholder, if this isnt the case you must phone them to tell them. Having someone else as the main driver (eg parent when it is the kid) is a fronted policy and fraud.

Do you really really really need to get a car? I remember a lot of others at college getting cars at 17 and having to pay enormous amounts for insurance, and, to be honest, most of them didn't actually NEED a car then.

If you need one to get to work etc you could sign up for something like liftshare and see if someone else will take you in return for petrol money. Public transport also works out cheaper (if you take into account insurance, depreciation, petrol etc), especially as you get discounts if you're under 25. I managed without a car until last year, and finally got my own car aged nearly 27! Yes, I have no no claims bonus yet, but because I was over 25 when I took it out it's not been that bad insurance wise, and the costs will drop once I've built up a NCB.
If you can possibly hang on until you're 25 (yes, I know it seems a very long time away, but it does go very quickly! ;) ) then the insurance is a LOT cheaper.

Come on, be realistic! Even if he doesn't 'need' a car, it's a guy thing! And it's very hard to pull if you haven't got a car
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

LOL. Personally I've always gone for blokes without cars, including my current boyfriend! ;) Never have understood the whole car = status symbol thing.

Waiting this long to get a car has meant that I got through university debt-free and bought a house last year because I wasn't having to fork out so much every year for a car. To me that's worth more than a status symbol! ;)
I think, over the 9 years I've not owned a car since passing my test, I must have saved over £10,000!

My brother (aged 25) has also never owned a car. He's married and has two young children and works full-time, so it is perfectly possible to survive without one.

Nah - get a car! lol.

You won't find it cheap though - but if you shop around like mad, haggle, etc and can find the cheapest. My first insurance at 18 on a 1.6 Peugeot 306 was just under a grand TPFT.

Cheapest car to insure is a Seicento, Cinquecento, Panda etc. However, realistically, look towards a Peugeot 306.

Good cars, powerful, and yet only insurance 4/5. If you do decide, have a look on https://www.pug306.net for more information. There are lots of us over on that forum, and lots of us quite young! lol.

Depends where you live to be fair, in the wilds of Scotland with a howling gale and horizontal rain coupled with no no public transport...it wouldn't be much fun...lol

Yeah, I know, going car-less isn't going to be right for everyone and you have to make a choice based on your own priorities and circumstances. But I have survived living (and working, and studying) in Lincolnshire, Devon, Surrey and London without a car, and still had a whale of a time.

As well as being cheaper it also cuts down on other costs (eg, if you go to the supermarket in the car, you can take home as much as you can pay for. If you go on foot or cycle you have to think hard about how much you can get home. That really helped me when I was on a very tight budget at university!). And no problems finding somewhere to park!

I suppose what I'm saying is that if you need a car then get one, and use the ideas on here to get it in the cheapest possible way, just don't get sucked into car ownership simply because you think it looks good. ;)

From memory, these are a group 6 or 7 !!:rotfl: :rotfl:

    Hi Joe.
Pass plus sounds like a good idea, even if you don't get a big discount. Also, your years no claims from the moped will be acceptable as it shows you have developed road sense.

From the list wig gave you, Fiats and Seats are cheap and fun but I wouldn't want to try to pull in one or be going above 20mph in an accident!
    The Corsa seems ok.
Otherwise, group 2 cars include Micras, my daughters choice.
A good car price guide will give you lots of info, ins groups, mpg, faults to look for, etc.
    Happy hunting.
    Russ.
